How do you know this? You admitted you never made them an offer at what you felt was the prevailing wage. That your company would immediately jump to sponsoring an H1B versus acting in good faith to hire Americans is at the heart of the controversy with H1B visas.

We never offered anyone a job at less than what their minimum salary requirement was.
ETA
Now this is probably a debatable point....I could see why you would say this. But I'll say that like I said our companies position was that it was counterproductive to the candidate and the manager to offer a salary lower than what that candidate wanted as a minimum. This is a rule that I could see added to the H1-B rules.

It's fairly clear that you don't know how the market works today.
We know how it works. Companies like the one that you worked for can’t compete in the labor market without the government directly interfering to suppress wages.
We’re saying we think that suppression is wrong. You’re siding with BigTech speaks volumes about you.

Then why are you so offended at them asking for more? You’re really butthurt about it. If they can’t get a job, they’ll lower their expectations.

That is correct...but they aren't employed yet (stay with me). The people that are currently employed in that position (at companies across the area) are working it on average in the 60K-65K range....that's the market salary range.
So if industry expands and companies are competing for qualified talent then it is ok to undermine that by bringing in cheap labor from overseas?

I'm not....I'm offended that so many small development shops get shite on for hiring H1-B workers.

So what are we to believe? That your company actually thinks a 21 year old kid, with no work experience, has realistic expectations for minimum salary requirements? Or that the hiring managers know they have access to labor at artificially suppressed rates?
Since you've already attested to using H1B's "quite frequently", my gut tells me it's the latter.

Again if you want to change it so bad I'd say present a solution and we'll talk about it.
BUT I'd say be careful what you ask for....you may not like the alternative to H1-B workers. I can tell you right now that solution won't be "hire any Bob, Dick, or Harry at whatever wage they want!".

Well, they’re big boys and girls. If you can’t compete without undermining American workers, I have no sympathy for you.

Now if your stance is the government needs to be involved for antitrust reasons that is a little more of an interesting discussion.

In general I think it is a stupid business decision to not innovate which I guess is what you are saying. If you can substantially lower your labor cost long term in your market then you should do it anyways. I will not be offended.

They should absolutely educate themselves....the salary guides for many industries are widely available for free.

Again if you think the system is "artificially" suppressing the rates let's talk about how to fix it....not just complain about it. Hell I'd probably get a raise myself.

Maybe they should open their company in a cheaper labor market.

Nah, they could just find an H1B to do it for less..
