The day Canada burned down the White House

CNN was just going nuts about Trump mentioning this in a telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Basically called him an idiot for thinking that.
It’s really not that far fetched.

I talk with a couple Canuks fairly often and they agree with Trump

Trust me, as one born and raised a Canuck - we were taught of Canada’s glory in the war if 1812.
Only country to argue they won a war 52 years before even being a country (don’t let that stop a good story though!)

This is a quote from your link "York, now Toronto, was captured and looted. And Newark, now Niagara-on-the-Lake, was burned. British forces attacked Washington and torched the White House."
Most of you are as dumb as the president. And that is saying alot

As others have said in this thread, if you are a Canadian, you learn that your country burned down the WH. This isn’t some sort of gotcha you think it is

Head coach,
If you took a survey of Canadians yesterday who burned down the whitehouse in the war of 1812 - they would answer Canada - it was drilled into us.
In five second Trump destroyed little brothers top claim against their inferiority complex (or acknowledging agreeing with trump) - hilarious

Canadians actually believe this
Posted on 6/6/18 at 7:39 pm to highcotton2
Are we even sure this comment occurred or is this more fake news from CNN?
If Trump really said that, it’s funny af, especially given Trudeau’s attempt at military nostalgia with his “we fought alongside you in many wars” yesterday.
If he didn’t, at least this time CNNs fake news is actually funny.

They have beady eyes and flapping heads.

Canada and Great Britain conspired against the U.S. in the War of 1812. Andrew Jackson was the hero, and we celebrated him by naming our capital city in his name.

Guys I’d like to remind you all of a tale -
Tecumseh the military genius that he was - it gets better - saw a paler face and said he’ll ill join them - trust me it gets better.
A relatively small contingent of british-Canadians managed to cross around - not through - Lake Michigan - these 500 or so souls teamed up with around 1,000 Indians led by the war chief and approached “Ft. Detroit” a well established and by 1812 a fairly well defended American outpost with 10,000 (ish) militiamen defending it.
Anyways as the siege progressed - Tecumseh ordered his 500 men to walk single file through the woods in a line and only at the head and foot of the line could they make themselves visible.
Those 500 men kept a continuous circuit entering and leaving the woods over all the visible distance the Fort could see making the Fort seemingly outnumbered . 10,000 Americans then surredered
Because the line was too long (ETA - and clearly the General was drunk in Soy milk) - that is the beginning of the March to Washington

Yes, Canadians fought in the War of 1812, but they did not burn DC. That was done by troops under English general Robert Ross, comprised of the 4th (King's Own) Light, 21st Royal North British Fusiliers, 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot, and 85th Regiment of Foot. These troops all originated in the British Isles.

The army that burned Washington and The White House were very much British from Europe, not Canadian.
A lot of those guys had experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

CNN is going bat sheet crazy on this. I can tell you first hand, a good friend of mine from Toronto would bring up the fact that Canada burned down the White House all the time! He took great pride in this. Another talking head on CNN said Canada didn't exist as a country in 1812, so it was called the province of Upper Canada in 1812, I think his statement is so misleading like everything else on CNN. Maybe CNN should ask some Canadians before spewing their lies.
Similar to how Canadian teachers explain to their students how Canada burned the White House, former Soviet Union teachers taught how the United States invaded the Soviet Union in 1918 a fact that most Americans are unaware of.
So CNN will add this to their fake list of lies the President has told and keep repeating it.

But saying Canada burned the White House just because Canada at that time was just a part of the British Empire is just dishonest.
If we are saying that Canada burned the White House, then I guess Canada attacked New Orleans and was defeated by Jackson.

I agree Cocky - I am simply telling you though that is how it is presented in Canada. It was drilled into us. It is the reason the Canadian government spent 28 million on the 200 year anniversary of 1812 celebrating it.
To me that is the awesomeness of the trump quote. Canadians can’t stand him but now they either have to acknowledge they have been lieing to themselves and their children for ever or trump is right (he is not).
It is hard to explain the inferiority complex up there and how big 1812 is in the psyche of the one time they took down big brother. It is hilarious.

To illustrate the point - notice that the CBC doesn’t even have this on their website. The globe and mail does but goes only as far to say ‘the reference itself is not entirely historically accurate’.
They can’t say anything more then that because it is a symbol of national pride. Too funny.
