Deep underground in the far reaches of the arctic North, there’s a fortress that’s supposed to be one of humanity’s safeguards if we can’t feed ourselves in the future. It’s a vault containing 500 million seeds, representing 880,000 different crops, many of which can’t be found in fields today. It’s the ultimate failsafe if the world’s farms burn or diseases decimate our staples and we have to start over. The facility is supposed to keep these seeds safe for hundreds of years, without human oversight.

What the designers weren’t counting on so much: floods linked to climate change.

The Guardian is reporting that a flood due to melting arctic permafrost has breached the facility, creating an icy mess. The seeds are safe for now — they’re packaged in moisture-proof bags, and the flood didn’t reach the vault, just the entrance. Still, it caught the facility managers by surprise.

Great, what retarded, earth saving thing has science planned for climate change that will fail also?

To be fair it's not like you believe scientists anyways.

Link?

In the past few weeks ive seen articles tying earthquakes in alaska and snow in the Smokies to climate change. Excuse me if im skeptical about isolated incidents.

You can keep reciting the ideoligical line all you want, i'll think a little more critically.

Most permafrost ebbs and wanes. It also rains in the arctic.

Libs start selling off their beach front property yet? If not, I'm not too worried.

Well that's a pretty lousy doomsday vault then

But the science is already settled right?

Previously undetected Forest area 2/3 the size of Australia discovered.

FAKE NEWS!

LINK to real news.

But the media should have done a little more footwork when reporting on the flooding. It turns out the vault regularly floods, as its designers anticipated.

There’s only one problem — the vault floods almost every year.

“In my experience, there’s been water intrusion at the front of the tunnel every single year,” Fowler said.

There's a real source, not some anonymous fake source.

Right. No "scientist" was quoted. Just some government reo. As interpreted by a reporter.

I was talking in generalities. Not aimed at you. I don't think the science is settled, but I don't think it's a complete hoax. Rational debate is fine on climate change.

Not even discussing climate change in which I believe. It's the overexaggerations dand falsehoods attributed to it which I don't believe.

The article in the OP was a bunch of Bull.

So, what you're saying is, the doomsday vault can't even handle something that isn't even close to a doomsday?

No, what he is saying is that Doomsday is almost here. Hell, half of the proponents of climate change have predicted a Doomsday date that has already come and gone.

So, "they" have been studying all the what ifs with regards to global climate warming change but they couldn't even foresee the very flooding they predicted jeopardizing our safeguard seed storage?

Top. Men.

So our "ultimate failsafe" isn't even able to protect seeds from minor temperature changes on the planet? That's reassuring. I thought these people were supposed to be the smart ones?
