Trump didn't shut down the investigation, he transferred it to DHS because DHS already had much of the information the commission was requesting.
So what happened to the DHS investigation?
Also, the TX SOS didn't find 58,000 illegal voters. Sam Taylor, a spokesman for the secretary of state, said the announcement on Friday did not mean that the authorities had discovered 95,000 registered voters who it knew for a fact were noncitizens.
Instead, the office was advising local officials to ask these voters via mail to provide proof of their citizenship.
You remember of course, when Kobach (the chairman of Trump's commission) said that he had discovered 5,000 voters in New Hampshire that didn't reside in the state. He (and then Trump) alleged that these voters had been bused in from out of state to vote in New Hampshire. It turned out it was college students voting where they went to school which was totally legal in New Hampshire.
The Texas SOS is alleging they have proof of illegal voting going back 20 years. That is laughable. They can't even prove that it happened 2 years ago.

Judicial Watch found several counties in California that had more people registered to vote than eligible voters in the county.
The state argued its not true. They say they take census data (remember the census counts legal and illegal) bumps the number for population growth (citizen population in Cali is declining not increasing). Basically taking a bogus number and then extrapolating on top of it.
They further state that Judicial Watch included inactive voters (implying those people cant vote). But then check out their statement regarding this....
“They are using bad math and flawed methodology,” Padilla said in a statement, adding that maintaining the inactive voter files complies with federal voting laws to avoid eligible citizens from being administratively disallowed from voting.
That clearly states they can vote and Judicial Watch was correct.
They then added the DMV motor voter law where illegals can, and are registered.
But thats not enough, now with a super majority in the state house they have passed a law to harvest votes. Basically allowing people to fill out a bunch of ballots and dump them in the box.
Its absolute horseshat what is going on there. I find it hilarious we send Jimmy Carter to go monitor elections in foreign countries and what Cali is doing would make Maduro blush in Venezuela.

A final note on this - the OP mischaracterized this story entirely. Texas is not saying that 58,000 illegal aliens voted in (state) elections. Here's what actually happened:
-The Texas SoS office flagged 95,000 registered voters who the state says counties should consider checking into whether they are US citizens.
-Those 95,000 registered voters are individuals who the state says have provided some form of documentation that showed they ere not a citizen when they were obtaining a driver's license or an ID card.
-Of those 95,000, 58,000 individuals cast a ballot in one or more elections from 1996 to 2018. A 22-year period.
This doesn't mean 58,000 non-citizens voted, and that's not what Texas is saying. IT says those names should be considered WEAK matches (they used the caps for emphasis). And we're talking over 22 years - it's perfectly reasonable that a number of that 58,000 whose name actually matched and voted were naturalized sometime between 1996-2018.
But sure, let's pass more racist voter ID laws that specifically disenfranchise minorities over something that isn't true.
