Well, as they say, once you're in orbit, you're halfway to anywhere. The only real bonus to using the Moon as a staging base would be if we could produce fuel there at a net gain in Delta-V versus lifting from Earth with all required fuel.

But, that's the straightforward answer - knowing how engineers and, specifically NASA engineers operate, I would bet we test every single component of the Mars spacecraft in Lunar orbit - because that's much closer and a little safer. Not sure about a landing, because those dynamics are going to have to be tested on Mars, anyway, but before we go to Mars, I'll bet credits to navy beans that we go (back) to the Moon first.

There aint no friggin EPA on the moon, you can run rockets without a catalytic converter or DPF system.

With no atmosphere on the moon, how are we going to "light the fires" for our rocket engines? To burn fuel, or really anything, you need oxygen. Our current rockets take a limited amount of rocket fuel and oxygen (or oxydizers) with them for re-entry burns and maneuvering. Are we going to ship and store tons of oxygen (and/or oxidizers) to the moon?

No air = no fire

Starting in lower gravity with no atmosphere on the moon allows you to burn less fuel on the takeoff and accelerate faster.

I know. I've played Kerbal space program alot.

I think that the rockets that they plan on using, are fueled by reaction, rather than combustion, so they probably don't require Oxygen.

Without gravity, you can probably blast off, using diet coke and mentos.

As far as I know rocket fuel contains its own oxygen source. It doesn't pull oxygen from the atmosphere.

had a corporate training in clear lake last April, stayed a few nights at the NASA Hilton. We would drink on the patio in the evenings and there was a group of NASA personnel staying at the Hotel. We got to talking to them and they said point blank that NASA was in turmoil because of this press conference Trump had just given. Everything NASA was doing was towards the goal of going to Mars. Just like that the POTUS challenged them to get back to the Moon first. Obviously DJT was briefed that to get to Mars, we have to go back to the Moon and set up Ops there.

Thought it was pretty interesting to say the least. The entire NASA group we talked to were female engineers.

Good. Hopefully this gets them focused. More space and less Muslim outreach.

The more I read about this tritium thing, it seems like another lunar venture can eventually be profitable. Apparently tritium is one of the main ingredients for fusion reactions.

Just another way to steel money from taxpayers. We spend billions and billions of dollars on this shite and these people get rich as frick off of taxpayer money. Everything our government is involved in is a fricking scam.

I agree, that most government stuff is a scam, but society has benefited greatly from the engineering and science developed for the space program.

Getting to Mars doesn't mean shite to me, but the things that we might learn, while trying to get there..that's some good shite.

The moon is a good place to refuel and get supplies. Heard they are putting in a Buc-ees.

Yea... science isn't really their thing. The only people who are going to survive on the moon are people with the ability to science the shite outta stuff.

It’s a great concept.

The majority of fuel that a flight uses is the immense amount required to escape Earths gravity. With a launch facility on the moon, there could be however many number of flights to take unused fuel to the moon to have a ship fully fueled when leaving the moon’s gravity. Leaving the moon takes very little fuel.

Once you leave the moon, you are not “flying” to Mars. You are doing a burn to escape the gravity of the moon and get captured again by the gravity of the Sun on an calculated eclipse that will create an intercept with the gravity of Mars.

This is how it will be done.

Trump is not high.

I was trying to play smart but you know what’s up.

There are only two subsets of the population that know how this stuff works: People at NASA and people that have spent untold hours on KSP.

Yes, that’s what I want to know also.
Seems like a couple of the most basic fundamentals are always over looked. ??????????????

What sort of propellant can be used with no atmosphere?? What are they pushing off of??

It's one of NASA's milk the taxpayer plans. I don't think it makes any sense.

Better to assemble the Mars mission parts in orbit. The commuting time is less.
