Tell me about travel to Mars and launching from the Moon.

During President Trumps call to the two female space walkers he said this:
Just curious, why would a Moon pit stop to Mars be better than directly going to Mars?
You are able to take more payload from the Moon to Mars that takes multiple trips from Earth to the Moon?
quote:
This is a first step — because we’re going to the Moon, and then we’re going to Mars. We’re launching from the Moon most likely. They seem to think that’s the best way of doing it, Jim. So we’re launching from the Moon.
And I just want to congratulate you both. You’re very brave, brilliant women, and you represent this country so well. And our country is very proud of you, and we are very proud of you. Millions and millions of people are watching you right now. But I will tell you: What you do is really something very special.
So, first the Moon, and then we go to Mars. Thank you both very much. Have a good time.

less gravity on moon so less escape velocity needed. can make multiple "short" trips to the moon with supplies/fuel, and make one "long" trip to mars

Thoughts are that the moon might be rich in compounds that could be used as rocket fuel. Escape velocity from the moon is far less than escape velocity for earth, so there could be some significant fuel/energy/weight savings.
The idea is to set up a permanent moon base to use as a launching point to explore the rest of the solar system.

No atmosphere.

You know how much energy/power is needed to leave earths gravity?
The moon is a good place to refuel and get supplies. Heard they are putting in a Buc-ees.

I love Trump but he should share..... I want some of what he is smoking

The way think about this working is it being a staging area after a dedicated Moon base is set up. Something with an extensive enough population to be able to produce at least some items there (from minerals taken from the Moon's surface).
The reason for this is that due to the far lighter gravity and no atmosphere on the Moon, taking off from there is FAR easier.

That's what I thought.
Mars gravity is 3.7 m/s^2 and the Moon is 1.62. m/s^2. I didn't know Mars' gravity was so low until looking it up. (Earth is 9.81 m/s^2 FWIW).

I mean that is certainly a small part of it, but the real reason is atmosphere and gravity.
It takes far, far less fuel to launch from the moon, therefore you can carry more payload and do it more efficiently from the moon.
"Delta-v budget" look it up

Man, don't you know we've been doing this for at least 45 years.....or haven't you read "Behold A Pale Horse" ?

Fuel
H3 (Tritium)
Moon is loaded with it.

Well. Mmkay. That pretty much explains your 9/11 thread

1) Establish a Permanent, manned base on Moon (which has 1/6th the gravity of earth) + of course the lack of an Atmosphere is huge in the same way. So thats 2 of strongest chains holding us to earth being reduced/gone altogether.
>
2) Once established, Use the abundant resources on the Moon itself to create not only Fuel in the form of Liquid O2 (from the newly discover frozen water) but also other necessary materials. Things that will now already be on the moon.
- the cost of putting 1 KG of material into Low Earth Orbit on earth is below (it varies by rocket and a few other things:
Falcon Heavy: $2200
Falcon 9 v 1.1- $4,109
DNEPR- $3,784
Space Shuttle - $10,421
Ariane 5- $10,476
Delta IV- $13,072
Atlas V- $13,182
3) That cost will be drastically reduced due to 1. the Moons lower gravity and 2. the lack of having to build and send the rocket/people/fuel from earth to the moon and then outwards.
4) Also, starting the manufacture of rockets/fuel/etc on the moon allows for the easier construction of a large orbital ship yard for constructing truly ENORMOUS vehicles in 0g that we simply couldn't build under normal gravity.

Daily schedule for astronauts on Mars.....
1) today walk around outside the pressurized quarters, pick up and examine rocks, and dig for water.
2) tomorrow...walk around outside the pressurized quarters, pick up and examine rocks, and dig for water.
3) for the next month......walk around outside the pressurized quarters, pick up and examine rocks, and dig for water.
4) keep the more weak members of the crew from going completely off the edge as they wonder (out loud) why in the hell did they ever volunteer to come to this barren, lifeless piece of rock in space called Mars.
........that is all.

CNN Spin - Trump says this is "First Step" belittling the contribution of past Women of Space.
CNN Spin - "We’re launching from the Moon most likely" Trump giving away Space Force secrets to Muh Russians.
CNN Spin - "And I just want to congratulate you both." Trump shows disrespect not knowing the Space women's names.
CNN Spin - "Millions and millions of people are watching you right now." CNN believes this number is highly inflated as typical of this president.

I work with NASA on certain applications and as explained to me, the lunar program is important for Tritium (think nuclear reaction w/o the radiation) and water. Guess what you can make fuel from? Water.
It is a lot easier to take water from the moon and create rocket fuel there than to send all that fuel up into space.
Additionally, the Gateway program will be the jumping off point and the elliptical orbit will help propel the launch at an incredible speed using the moon's gravity.

We should offer all the dems a one way trip to either the Moon or Mars.
