What are we thinking???? Armed guards and arm teachers???

You mean like Tx has been doing for 6 years? Even put Signs up saying teachers and staff are armed? 170 districts worth.???

Utah is among at least eight states that allow, or don’t specifically prohibit, concealed weapons in K-12 schools, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Armed teachers is just something that screams unintended consequences to me.

Kinda like the unintended consequences of schools being gun free zones.

My feeling on the idea is that it should be optional. If a teacher wants to carry, let them. But don't force every teacher to do it.

Sadly, districts in the bigger cities have pretty much universally opposed training and arming teachers.

Just watched an ABC youtube clip from last year. At that time, 25,000 schools had armed guards. Out of those 25k, 68% were geared toward high schools.

And yes, Perry appreciated safety at his schools.

That's why the school boards in Texas that have chosen to allow teacher carry select men and women who might have a military background, etc.

Those trustees know who should and should not be allowed to have a gun around kids. That's the beauty of local control.

Yes. Exactly.

It should absolutely be optional. And very few people should be knowledgeable as to which teachers are armed.

I am a professor at a university in Texas.
I carry while on campus.
If an active shooter ever gets past my locked classroom door, my students can rest assured that any consequences will be fully intended on my part.

My thinking on this is that it should be 100% a state and local issue. There could also be variations on the idea, such as the ability of a few trained staff members to access a secured gun safe in the event of emergency. Of course, no teacher should be required to carry.

Yep. Just do away with the pointless (and more likely, dangerous) 'Gun Free Zone' designation, and be done with it. Sure, keep normal school prohibitions with students, but allow adults to carry as the laws of the jurisdiction allow and as those adults see fit. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well that's stupid and defeats the purpose.

Interdasting.

Is it done b/c of the lunatic school shooters or what? Figured that would be a fire code violation or something along those lines.

What happens when a student needs to leave early? They ask you for the key?

I have said this a few times, I know about 40 teachers, college and HS and each has said this very thing.
