Maybe ask the kid how he feels about Mom walking the parking lot instead of seeing him being honored?
My granddad missed my hs graduation while all 3 of my other grandparents attended because he didn’t feel like going. I understand why now, but I was really pissed at the time.

I can see your point here. I guess I'm just a cranky old man these days and don't see the point of a graduation ceremony being part of the schedule of events until it's a high school graduation. The mom in question, however, is demonstrably a complete loon. Maybe the child will rebel in typical teenage fashion when the time comes and will break free of Mom's influence. We can only hope.
