Brought to you, of course, by the Failing New York Times.

It was a matter of time before they went after Nintendo.

The game is rife with stale, retrograde gender stereotypes — elements that were perhaps expected in 1985, when the first Super Mario Bros. was released in the United States, but that today are just embarrassing.

Wow...what a joke. Every Mario game is like this. Pretty soon they will start writing about the literary "Hero's Tale" is sexist. If I wasn't at work right now, I would get back in bed and start over. This article might have given me cancer.

We can only have Nintendo games starring gender neutral characters now.
I bet the NYT loves Birdo

Super Mario Bros 2 allowed a player to play as Princess Toadstool, and she could jump further than all the other male characters.

Thats what they're doing now. Mario and Zelda are exactly that.
If people love something, liberals will try to take it and if they can't, they'll ruin it

You have to be a pretty fricking miserable person to find something offensive in Super Mario Bros.

Yeah she had to have magic flying powers to be a player worth a frick. Ever notice this about all the girl power movies and tv shows? If the girl is to be a hero she has to have some mysterious magical power like the "Force" to be able to compete with the men.

Does the author also mention that he rescues the princess from a castle - a physical manifestation of barbaric repression of human rights and armed conflict?

I mean, this just reads exactly like the Opinion section of the Onion. If you weren't to tell me this was from the NYT, I would automatically assume it was from the Onion. How did an article this utterly ridiculous get past editor.
It's fricking Super Mario. Bowser captures Princess Peach and Mario has to save her. This is like bitching about milk and cereal. You pour in the cereal then the milk. No one plays Mario for the plot.

This. It's freaking Mario.
I can't imagine the liberal mindset of walking around in my daily life looking for things to pretend to be offended by

If bowser was a white male and Mario was a Muslim all would be right in the lib world
Game would be celebrated as inspiring and ahead of its time

Zelda is completely different. Zelda is a badass character who has crazy magic powers and can fight just as good as any men in their universe. If anyone tried to tell me Zelda was sexist, I would tell them to sit the frick down. The most popular installment of the series (Ocarina of Time) shows Zelda as a total beast. She cross dresses to hide her identity, so I'm sure the writer of this terrible article would complain that the only way we could be comfortable with a badass female character was if we thought she was male first. She gives link the power to defeat the antagonist in the game. She guides him throughout his journey and tells him were to go and how to win. Without Zelda, Link is a little orphan boy who lives out in the woods with a bunch of fairy children. Nobody.
I often see people on this forum claim SJW bullshite when it really doesn't apply. It applies pretty well here. Quit trying to ruin the beloved gaming franchises that got us were we are today. I would be willing to bet that at least 90% of game developers in the world today would claim that Mario and/or Zelda were major influences in games they have created. The games with all your gender neutral tip toe around your feelings plot lines and characters were only made possible because of the foundation laid by the brilliance of Nintendo in the 1980s.

And you can play as her as well here, you just have to beat the game first.

One word and one word alone destroys the author's premise.
Metroid
Released one year later, Metroid had one of the most badass main characters of all time.
Oh, did we mention that Samus is a woman?
