You're missing that the answer is STILL a reflection of SELF interest.
You see. Among white liberals, having a few conspicuous "other" group friends is like a fricking trophy you get to carry around every minute of the day and get congratulated for. It's as much as status symbol in the circles they run as a Ferrari might be among Hollywood actors.
So, OF COURSE they highly value "other" groups individuals. If they can acquire enough of them in the form of friends, they're treated like fricking royalty.
Having other white friends doesn't get you ANY of that.

Take some people I know who live in Jackson, MS.
White. Progressives.
They just had their first daughter.
They keep stating how they want to move to a city that is more diverse.
The states that they choose:
North Carolina
California
Oregon
Washington
Colorado
Like Jackson isn’t diverse enough.
