I don't have a dog in this hunt but I support any people to have a choice. I have a question. How did they go about deciding the boundary and why? It seems to all over the place and there are areas that appear to be part of Baton Rouge that will be completely surrounded by St George.

St George cannot secede from East Baton Rouge Parish. If SG is created, those of us who live in it will still be paying taxes to EBRParish government PLUS we will be paying for a new city government and a new school district. This is going to be very expensive for those of us in the new SG.

We are paying full price now. We just aren't as much for our buck.
I live in unincorporated EBR and pay slightly less than 4 mills lower property taxes than my dad does who lives in BR. I was paying more than he was until the Together folks stuck him with the CATS tax.

I wish we could have a new school district without having a new municipality. I am in favor of creating a St George School District.

That was my position last go round, but I spoke with someone close to the top of the organizers and was told they have been digging into how our tax dollars are spent. He didn't go into details, but he said I wouldn't be happy when some things get out.

I'm waiting to see what he meant.

I've seen some of the numbers. Yeah it's astounding how much money the city has wasted and it only gets worse with time. Wait until they release it, it's good info to have.

I heard it was pretty bad.

Did you read the BRBR today about City-Parish services?

Another indictment of the status quo.

What we pay for

EBR has one of the highest ratios of local civil service employees to citizens in the country. I think Detroit is the only one higher. Think of all the costs for pensions. And every year the C-P keep raising the budget

Because nothing says long term tax base like brick and mortar stores and Louisiana casinos.....

that's why SG was trying to incorporate them, and cried like the bitches they are when the city-parish annexed it

A financial study and a general budget for St. George was just released.

LINK

quote:

Conclusions

A. City of St. George

Based on our assumptions included in the preceding analysis, the City of St. George would be financially viable with an estimated General Fund budget surplus in year 1 of $24.5 million (42% of Budgeted General Fund Revenues). First year revenues are budgeted at $58.4 million, and expenditures are budgeted at $33.9 million, including $4.0 million of discretionary additional police expenditures.

B. Consolidated Baton Rouge Government

The incorporation of the City of St. George would result in a manageable General Fund operating deficit of $28.9 million (or 9% of General Fund revenues) to the Consolidated Baton Rouge Government’s General Fund budget. Such amount should not result in an increase in taxes and could be minimized during the incorporation transition period, which is expected to take two to three years, by normal employee attrition and retirement, and/or a reduction in the scope and related costs of vendor/professional contracts that provide services no longer needed or needed at a reduced level.
