If I'm a frequent/professional burglar I'm carrying around a lease with the address blank.
If cops show up, I write the address in real quick and claim I live there.
Pretty much the only difference between breaking and entering and squatter is the squatter claims he has a lease.
"sorry, this is now a civil matter, peace out. Do you like my new ink?" - LEO everywhere.
In most states with a primary residence, you have to tell the cop that they are trespassing.
Then it's a criminal matter and they go to jail, fake lease or no fake lease.
For IL

"Squatter's rights" is actually one of the most often mis-cited legal theories. The legal term is "adverse possession" - and it does not apply the moment someone illegally moves into a property. Squatters have no rights unless they are able to live in a property without the owner's consent for at least five years, and they pay property taxes during that time period. If they do that, they gain the right to ownership of the property.
If they haven't been there five years, or you're still paying the property taxes, you have the ability to have them evicted. Since you have no lease, you can just go directly to court and request a court order against any one you know lives there "and John Does 1-50," which will apply to anyone else that might be living there. You can also sue for damages for trespassing, which could include what you could be getting by leasing the property to someone else, plus the cost of repairing any damage they do to the premises.

I've been seeing these stories for a couple of years now - and I just don't understand how it happens.
Our legal system is plumb nuts and often useless too.

Breaking into your home is different than refusing to move from a vacant home which is the only situation I heard of
The new thing is breaking into your home while you are not there and refusing to leave. The produce a fake rental agreement and have to be brought out. You go to Disney for a week and comeback to find your home occupied. Or you have a summer winter home set up and while at one they squat in the other. This the scenario I am most concerned with as I have my main residence and a smaller retreat in the mountains. I would not deal with squatters.

This is where the mafia came in handy

So squatters have rights to the dwelling what’s to keep you from shooting their ads for trespassing once they leave the dwelling and set foot on your property. Trespassing is trespassing or have them arrested.
I’m assuming their squatter rights don’t extend to actual property besides dwelling
