That doesn't mean he's that popular at all.
He doesn't have same strength of support that Michael Jordan did in the 1990s. Nobody I know goes crazy over LeBron James as a young person myself.
Plus, not that many people watch Basketball outside of the US. Basketball and American football viewership numbers are much lower outside of the US compared with soccer.

I linked an article in a post this very morning that touches upon this aspect of the prog agenda:
The Law of Merited Impossibility
The coinage is Rod Dreher’s and goes back to the early debates on homosexual marriage. As Dreher formulates it, the Law of Merited Impossibility holds: “That will never happen, and when it does, boy will you [homophobes, transphobes, racists, sexists, whatever] deserve it.”
This Law is used, first, to disarm resistance to the latest leftist enthusiasm. Whatever the innovation is, it will have no adverse consequences. None! Puberty blockers and disfiguring surgeries have no downsides whatsoever. How dare you suggest they might!
Its second purpose is to dismiss out of hand “slippery slope” arguments—despite, or because of, the fact that every single such argument over the last twenty years at least has proved true. Worried that allowing people to “self-identify” as whatever sex they want will lead to pervy 50-year-old men exposing themselves to’ tween girls? Insist, loudly and indignantly, that that will NEVER happen and anyone who suggests it might is an alarmist bigot with a heart full of hate.
The third purpose is to enforce the new caste system. Those who get to impose fresh irrational indignities on the rest of us are the upper caste. Those who object, or even have reservations, are lower. The latter are not allowed to harbor, much less express, any doubts.
Whatever humiliation the upper caste has planned for us, we deserve and must meekly accept. Hence when said pervy 50-year-old actually does start waving around “her” equipment in the girls’ locker room, if any parent dares object, let ’em have it with both barrels. That thing that ten seconds ago you said would “never” happen? Now it’s righteous punishment for the retrograde.
The Law of Merited Impossibility has done wonders for the Left in helping to ram through a wide variety of radical societal changes and cow into silence all opposition. It’s currently busy destroying girls’ and women’s sports, an outcome that we were assured would “never” happen. Though one wonders what the ladies did do to deserve it.
The Law is a bit passé, though, because our rulers rarely any longer feel the need to reassure normie Americans that everything will turn out OK, that the things we most fear won’t happen. Mostly, the holders of the Megaphone just skip to the second half, the angry insistence that we deserve it….

People liked sports when they could at least pretend to look up to the men they cheered for.
Who wants to pull for woke crybaby assholes?
It’s not really even that interesting to pull against them.

Your lack of awareness that the film isn't playing in China makes me laugh.
Plus, I really don't think LeBron James is as big as you guys think he is. He has a Chinese fan base but that doesn't mean he's universally known in China.

Says the inbred who doesn't realize the film isn't playing in China so it doesn't matter what China thinks about LeBron James.
It's about the rest of the world excluding China. LeBron isn't really that big in Europe for example. Plus, you're mistaking a vocal Chinese fanbase for a very large one.
Most Chinese people could care less about LeBron James. Heck, most Western people probably could. My parents don't care or watch Basketball so they're not really fans of LeBron James.

Reading Live Not By Lies now.
Give us an update when you finish it. I know Dreher has LSU and Louisiana roots and a devoted following on this board — and rightly so.
I was a long-time subscriber to the “American Conservative” magazine and have a love/hate relationship with Dreher myself. I fervently believe The Benedictine Option is both an illuminating and instructive book on how devoted Christians of all denominations can reconcile to live their faith in a post-Christian United States.
Dreher correctly recognizes that the Cultural Wars are over and the secular materialists of both the left and right have not only won, they are wholly triumphant: sexual licentiousness, rabid consumerism and slavish devotion to acquiring the latest technological gizmos has replaced a desire to seek out the ancient truths.
Dreher also correctly realizes that — love him or hate him — Donald Trump is neither a solution nor the cause of the continuing crisis but merely a visceral reaction to the moral collapse of our governing institutions. Dreher further realizes that the demonic Jacobins who now form the base of the Democratic Party seek not “social justice” but a total commitment to eradicate — by violent means if necessary — any trace of Christian sentiment from the public consciousness:
Yankee Doodle Yugoslavia….
Dreher argues convincingly in The Benedictine Option that we should socially engage with the world like the Benedictine Order and live our faith by serving our local communities. Yet not once in the The Benedictine Option does Dreher mention Federalism, nullification or secession as both practical and peaceful political solutions to the rancorous cultural divide that has led to the bifurcation of the nation.
Now, since Dreher seems to be a devout and sincere Christian, I certainly understand his criticism and opposition to Trump’s brand of vulgar populism. Yet Dreher repeatedly promotes the insidious myth that if electors would only send the correct slate of morally enlightened candidates to the Potomac Cesspool, the Republic will be saved.
It is an absurd fantasy: Washington can no more be reformed than a malignant cancer. Indeed, Dreher’s servile praise for Deep State grifters such as Ben Sasse, Mitt Romney and Bill Cassidy as men of great moral conviction wholly undermines the primary message of the The Benedictine Option:
The GOP Senate Honor Roll….
If Liberty is to continue in this once great nation, it will arise from peaceful subsidiary, nullification and even secession movements in the individual states. The current crisis continues until enough Red State Americans of good conscience — of which I certainly include Dreher — come to this inevitable conclusion.

That’s pretty embarrassing for all parties involved. That should have been a lock for at least $250M.
