Some May Call Trump Crazy, But South Koreans Say It’s Like A Fox

By Simone Grace Seol
May 14, 2018

These days, South Koreans are enjoying feelings of relief and optimism that most have never known in their lifetimes.

. . . the recent meeting of the leaders, as well as the upcoming Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, represent progress that most South Koreans assumed would be impossible to see in our lifetimes.

As an American living in Seoul, I am struck by the disparity between the United States and South Korea in public portrayals of President Trump’s role. Plainly, the outpouring of goodwill and gratitude toward him in Seoul would surprise most Americans.

Korean opinion writers and TV pundits lavish praise on Trump, attributing tactical brilliance and bullish confidence. The same qualities that used to invite mocking—his temper, propensity for spontaneous tweeting, grandstanding—are now interpreted as the bracing medicine to shock the region out of its longstanding ills.

Above all, Koreans are grateful that this American president dared to take risks to move the needle on North Korea, which many previous administrations miserably failed at. “President Obama never did anything for us” is a frequent refrain of people who were disillusioned by the 44th president’s doctrine of “strategic patience.”
...

suggestion that Trump be awarded the Nobel Prize for his handling of North Korea met a lot of derision in the United States. The New York Times opinion page likened the president to a “wildly hirsute cartoon figure.”

It has been a long time since Trump was seen as a joke in Korea. In fact, according to a poll conducted by the newspaper Dailian and published on May 9, four out of ten South Koreans believe Trump deserves the peace prize, a statistic that would probably astonish most Americans. At the time of writing, entering “Trump” on Naver.com, South Korea’s top search engine, yields the top suggested search of “Trump Nobel Prize.”
...

The plain fact is that no other American president has come close to achieving these things in Korea. Past Republican and Democratic administrations have been similarly unambitious and inert. I don’t know about the Nobel prize, but how about giving Trump some credit where it is plainly due? Koreans are happy to.

Our media can't get past partisan bullshite.

Trump has done more to deserve the Nobel Prize than Obama, Gore, or Carter.

I expected Trump to struggle on foreign policy, but he has been one of the best presidents in my lifetime in that area

Yeah trump has actually done very well with foreign policy. Didn't think we'd see this much progress in N Korea.

This is what those dumbasses in DC and their MSM mouthpieces were terrified of. A complete outsider political novice coming into DC and showing those shite career politicians up by actually getting things accomplished.

They have to constantly remind you just how terrible he is all while he's making world peace.

It is the most remarkable thing - during the primary this was one of my top criticisms of Trump - "that he didn't even know where Asia was." Now I stand in amazement at his successes. He is doing exactly what I have wanted some POTUS to do for 30 years.

I thought he was unskilled in everything but building big buildings and felt he was doing the 'politics thing' either as a pastime or for planning some new reality show.

I admit I knew nothing of him other than a few appearances on FNC F&F and his persona demonstrated during the primary campaign. Neither of those exposures did anything but revulse me.

I still cringe at his persona - but dammit, I LOVE what he is accomplishing.

it's a side show but a good side show.

it's positive so only real haters would say anything negative about Trump's attempts here.

But, none of this erases the fact that Dennis Rodman deserves some recognition here.

One of the heavily used memes in politics that predate Trump even is this idea that you have to know a bunch of detailed information about the individual actors to successfully engage in negotiations with them

If I were writing a book tomorrow on negotiations and my own experience with them I would say that precisely the opposite is true. That I perform best when I have study up on the situation just as it's coming.

Now make no mistake you still have to be knowledgeable about General subjects required to have discussions. But I have personally found that the weaker the relationships I have with all parties involved the more successful I am at dealing with them

Well, he did nothing positive for people in the USA either. But he did tons to screw our country up. At least he was consistent.

South Korean journalists print and discuss factual news.

Our msm print and discuss anything negative/false to retake a narrative.

I agree with you on this - as with most things Shorty Rob. It’s easier to stay objective when you don’t know the other person on a negotiation. You build trust and a relationship as the negotiations proceed. If you kiss arse or lie, well - you never build respect; and you can’t build trust without respect.

Trump allowed NOKO to save face, while disarming. To me. That has been his most amazing diplomatic feat. He’s using disarmament as a way for Un to build his country. And Trump never forgot who or what he was advocating for - American Interest.

Hats off to the POTUS. It’s amazing to me that his detractors have managed to find ways to criticize him about this. And I’m always in awe of his ability to take a position, and hold it - even in the face of immense pressure.

it also makes your questions come off as much more genuine. When you look at the parties and you say something like help me understand where you are coming from regarding X you are seriously looking for their input. And they know it. This doesn't mean you're going to be a rube. You're fully aware they think they can take advantage of this. But it does allow you to digest information in a less confrontational manner
