Some gun violence statistics and a hypothetical question

First let me say I am against any type of firearm ban. This is purely hypothetical
There are about 11,000 homicides from firearms every year
66% of those are from handguns. About 3% from ARs
Since 1985, 223 people have been killed in mass shootings by ARs (and most of these shootings the shooter also had shotguns and handguns, so this number is likely inflated). Over that same period of time approximately 385,000 people have been killed by handguns
So my question is simple. What makes these 17 people in Florida so fricking special when over 6,000 people are killed by handguns every year?
And my answer is, this is a purely political, emotional topic fabricated by the media and liberals who want to slowly erode our rights because looking at the facts an AR ban makes absolutely no sense.

This is the correct answer. This is purely a stunt to try and disarm law abiding America and overlook the inner city violence that plagues this country.
Typical leftist hypocrisy which is why I am against any and all conversation in regards to "gun control."

Around 50% of murder victims killed by firearms are white

Exactly. Just like raising the minimum wage, etc.

They aren't special. This is an emotional issue and people aren't thinking rationally about it.

Most of those are African-American Males. It's a hard and sad truth.
I'll take the original argument ever farther. Since nearly 2/3's of gun deaths in this country every year are suicides, then it really gets to the point that this is a MENTAL HEALTH crisis that needs to be addressed.
Edit: Five thirty eight has an excellent article on the subject.

The 11,000 figure is strictly homicides. That don’t not include suicides
And African Americans make up about 50% of those victims

Democrats know if you make handguns illegal some of their voters would still carry illegally and therefore be unable to vote once labeled a felon. Why chance it?

Not gonna debate the hypothetical question, as I get where you're headed, but the Vegas shooter used AR's and killed over 500 people.

Never considered that nefarious plot

Bruh second hand smoke kills 10k more people than guns do each year (including suicides).
"If it saves one life" is a fricking joke. As is anyone who says they want to ban firearms to save lives.

You're partially right, but it's more than that. Weapons like the AR are the front line in the defense against tyranny. It is no accident that these are the weapons that leftists want out of the hands of Americans the most. The worst part is, they don't even seem to care that they would only be taking them from the law-abiding.

The LV shooter killed 58 people and wounded 489.

You are right but this is only part of the equation. The whole furor over AR-15s is in part to distract away from what I believe is coming from the DOJ Inspector General report and investigations from the regular DOJ on a variety of topics.
Trump is not the kind of guy to just let this stuff go.
There is a reason the former Obama people and Dem campaign people have lawyered up.

Not all were wounded by gunfire though.
