I hated it when I was in.

Preferred the 14. Always felt like the 16 would snap in half if I tripped.

Just use AK 47s and go back to producing M1 Garamds.

They won't jam up that's for sure

I get the weight issue. But why not have different arms off different combat situations where you get max efficiency?

Well, I can confirm that it will not snap in half if you trip.

The US army does have different systems. It's just that the m4 is the one that covers the vast majority of requirements. There is no general shortage of effective small arms in the military, despite what the navy squeals were crying about a few years ago.

M4s don't "jam up" either. There is no reliability problem with the M4. It works just fine. So well, in fact, that the AK47 has no practical advantage over the m4 in that regard. It is mythology that the M4 is malfunction prone and the AK47 "never jams".

Because everyone in America has an opinion on the M4.

I honestly never put much thought into it. The military gave me a rifle. That rifle goes boom extremely reliably. I’m sure there’s better shite out there but you work with what you’re given.

This whole debate kinda reminds me of a saying we had in cycling, "Cheap, light, strong. Pick any two." The point being, there are always compromises. No weapon system is going to be perfect no matter what the Pentagon types decide.

The M16, and not the A1,A2 and A3, had no forward assist mechanism for the bolt. As such, for some stoppages, the user had to resort to tapping the rifle butt on the ground. This presented a problem in combat action when such a procedure might be impractical.

So the forward assist mechanism for the bolt was added, and is still there today on this platform and its carbine variants.

Perhaps the stories about users discarding the M16 for the AK refer more to the basic M16, rather than the later models with the forward assist mechanism for the bolt.

Pretty sure the A1 was the first to have a forward assist

Hell, the French are in the process of phasing in the HK 416 and phasing out the FAMAS.
