This is what it all boils down to, imo.

The media.

People "obsess" over things like this (as someone claimed earlier) due to media hypocrisy. This whole subject wouldn't even be a thing, or at best it'd only be discussed by the most fringe conspiracy theorists out there, if the media reported in a fair way. Half the population can only sit quietly so long while being called racists, misogynists, islamophobes, biggest threat to democracy, etc. Eventually they start attacking back, and they do so in the same childish and petty ways in which they've been attacked.

Obama's presidency is when the media stopped even trying to be objective.
