He’ll change his mind within the first 6 months and start counting down the days to EAS. Take it to the bank. Almost all do.

I will never let my son serve in the military. I’m not sending him off to die for the current ideals of this nation. This is not my America.

Same, but my son is still 3 years out. He excels in school but doesn't like it so he plans to put in 4 years to qualify for LDWF.

I haven't given him my thoughts on the military but I'm trying to convince him to go to school instead. He's gonna graduate a year early so he'd have to work a year before joining. He'll also have some college credit and could get a gen studies degree in 3 years. I've told him he could start his career 2 years earlier if he goes to college but he's not interested.

I served during Bush and recruited during Obama. Does the military suck now? Yes, but only because we're not at war, like we used to. Garrison sucks, but your son will be fine in the AF. I was a Marine deployed multiple times, benefits are better than most think.

Coast Guard has some of the same programs and doesn’t have the same political interests?

Just a thought direction...

They're also not DOD, DHS, and if there is a budget issue, they don't get covered.

I think some of that has been amended in recent years. I’m an old 0311 first 2 years then re-enlisted in the wing as a 6078 the second stint for 4.

I would like to make one small recommendation to any youngster glassing this over:

If you are going to join anything you want to be what they do not support trash going in.

The USMC is 100% about fighting as is the Army (somewhat) go and be the focal point not the lackey.

If later on when you have those “jump wings”on you wish to do something different in the service you will be more respected than you know.

You can even transfer services.

I had nearly a college degree but got fed up with it all and went in open contract.

Best decision I ever made.

would say do it a million times over. All the training an clearance he would get as an data guy and certification on fiber optics and installation and trouble shooting will only help him the day he gets out. Then add in the Intel clearances he will get plus gi bill. Yes 100x over

That is his goal. We sat down and talked and looked at it and what you said is a goal of his. He first wants to serve his country and second get the training, education, experience, etc to set him up in the civilian world with readily marketable skills and no student debt. He’s a smart kid and his plan is very solid.

I like to think I have. He has a solid moral foundation and is set in his conservative views. He listens to other points of view but he maintains his foundation.

I would make sure he is tracking the new retirement pension is not what is was and unsure if I would do 20year with new Blended retirement system. Prob minimum time to aquire certs he wants and qualify for gi bill and get out

That’s a good point. It’s been many many years since I had anything to do with the military (civilian contractor with the Navy, I’m not a vet) and him and I definitely need to sit down and research that and ask some questions

My son left the A.F. about 3 years ago, he got a good education from them and I'm proud that he served, especially the honor guard duties for funerals. He went for Cyber Security.

All that aside, they were pushing leftist agenda crap even back then. The B.S. he had to endure was several times worse than what I experienced as a grunt in the Army or a contractor for the A.F.

That’s a real concern of mine.

He very well might. He’s still a kid and things always look better on the outside. But I know his resolve and if he truly wants it I have zero doubts he will do it

I’m sorry, I thought I did. Basically the extreme ideology of “wokeness” and also CRT that is potentially permeating the military

Let him make up his own mind. He'll learn soon enough whether to stay in for more than one term of Enlistment.

You'll have plenty of time to provide guidance to him. He'll see for himself whether this would be a career or just a stepping stone.
