They are still employees dude. Playing a football game is their job and they answer to a boss who writes their checks just like the normal working man.

The NFL should have nipped this issue in the bud right away, they instead let it fester for 2 years.

Had they clamped down on it right away, they would have had a week or so of bad PR from the left wing sports media: a few stupid OP eds in various papers, a few crybabies on Sportscenter ranting and raving, and it would have been over and done with, teh world would have moved on to some other phony outrage issue.

Instead the fear of that small amount of blowback caused them to let the entire thing spiral out of control for years and the damage it did to them is 1000 fold than it would have been.

No sports league in the world can have their league hijacked and turned into a political vehicle by their players. The NFL plans on going international. The NFL desires to be mainstream and appeal to everyone under the sun. Those two things can't co-exist.

The simplest solution would be to stop televising the players during the anthem. Would be extremely easy to do and would eliminate the protests eventually as they realized the platform isn’t there anymore.

Stop playing the anthem during sporting events. It's dumb.

Play the anthem it’s fine. Keep your team inside it’s fine. If you bring them out then they stand, no issue. DeMaurice Smith had the advantage and blew it. Roger and the owners waited until he went too far with his bluff and called him.

I thought Smith was competent initially but he’s shown he’s a Patsy. If the NFLPA got a Fehr type leader they could get something, but they’re scared to lose money and status in short run.

What has smith ever done that gave you the impression that he is competent?

Compared to Upshaw?

That’s why I thought he was competent initially.

He’s a joke that’s got it good with Goodell so he isn’t going anywhere. Most of the players who actually care about labor issues want him gone.

Smith isn’t going anywhere because the core group he reps changes so much. The guys who fought the battles are now in bed with the league.

I’m not sure the NFLPA will ever be able to deal successfully much like the NBAPA, they do not want to really learn the issues and intricacies of the deal. That’s just my opinion

I feel Smith and NFLPA does a horrible job of educating its membership. Which is why I’m shocked they never wanted someone from MLBPA

The Rookie Symposium should never be held by the NFL. The NFLPA should do it and actually educate guys on what issues are. The few guys I have talked to about it say it’s just a way of indoctrination

ETA Hope I didn’t derail this thread too badly .

I think a former NBA rep was in contention during the last election but didn’t win.

They are at a disadvantage compared to the NBA tho, since player injuries are so much worse and careers are so much shorter, it’s much harder to convince players to take a work stoppage seriously, and the owners have been smart enough to let them taste what it’s like to not have their support system with their lockouts so it trains the players to view work stoppage as something they want to avoid at all cost.

Tbh they need a strong leadership that isn’t going to take any offer but more importantly they need some of the older more stickler owners of the NFL to die out. NBA has some of the best labor benefits in large part to a fairly young and innovative set of team owners who looked past the pennies to see the dollars.

Because It’s a protest against an imaginary boogeyman. White supremacy, oppression, police brutality, etc. To the extent these are even real problems anymore, they’re infinitesimal compared to real and obvious problems such as black on black crime.

And you can’t view the protest in a vacuum. Keep in mind how Vogue it is to bash white people. Liberals constantly trying to muster a race war. BLM constantly blocking interstates. Nazi this, fascist that. So a lot of people don’t want to see more of this nonsense at a football game. I do agree that if the media wouldn’t make a big deal out of it, it’s be a nonstory. But that’s what the media does.

Seriously, what sort of narrative does the NFL want surrounding their game.

Hey White Dudes, please spend $500 on tickets, parking, and concessions, as well as 6 hours out of your Sunday coming to our game.

Oh BTW, I hate you and your family and your stupid, evil, racist country!

Still plz come to the game tho.

U an idiot if you think first amendment covers this. At my job I do as my bosses tell me when I am on the clock. These over paid arse wipes are on the clock. Ultimately it is hurting the NFL brand and any player who does not see this is a true DA and his value diminishes along with his potential for endorsements.

Wrong:

quote:

The NFL tries to keep its financials a secret, but the Green Bay Packers are a public team and have to divulge certain information. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Packers reported record revenue for 2017. Included in that windfall was $255.9 million in national revenue, a share that every team gets. Simple math says that’s more than $8 billion in revenue distributed to the 32 NFL teams.

If the NFL is dying, just about every business in America would love to be dying at the same rate.

How much did revenue increase in the NFL?

While there’s a misguided hysteria over television ratings, the bottom line for the NFL is improving.

ESPN’s Darren Rovell said the national revenue the Packers reported is a 4.9 percent increase over last season. It’s hard to make billions and still increase revenue, especially when so much of the revenue is based on television money. Across the board, television ratings have decreased with cord-cutting and a shift in how people consume media. The NFL felt the effect too, although at a slower rate than some other shows and networks.
