Simple question about banning anything

Why does the left think prohibition of anything is effective when it has literally never worked with any item/substance.

The left only wants things banned that suits them or gives them political power.
They don't want drugs banned because that goes against their base of voters .... and votes are power.
Same thing for abortion.
Now, guns are the biggie because it's multi-layered. A ban on guns makes the citizenry dependent upon the government for protection. A ban on guns also pulls the teeth out of any possible uprising or backlash against big government one day. A ban on guns also plays to their base SJW snowflake voter block ... especially those that consider themselves to be intellectually or academically elite. They claim a gun ban gives them moral superiority, gives them tue high ground. Once again it's all about power.

I think most of the leaders on the left side of the isle could care less about banning guns. I think they're more interested in the potential political points they can score because they know the other side of the isle does value the Second Amendment and they can beat them over the head anytime something bad happens with a gun.
No doubt a lot of the sheep on the left side of the isle actually believe that, but I don't think the higher ups do. Obama could have, without Republican, banned "assault rifles". Did he? No, of course not, because that'd take a club out of their arsenal to beat conservatives over the head with.
Just my 2 cents.
