quote:

Despite being paid the least and disrespected the most, Black women are often expected to carry some of society's heaviest burdens.

You may remember that there was no shortage of calls for Black women to "save us" last year when it was time to vote in US elections. And while many others are afforded off days, Black women rarely are.

After the death of George Floyd, many people gave advice to "check in on your Black friends," and this turned into Black women tending to others' feelings of guilt. It was an additional burden when we were already struggling to make sense of what was happening.

The expectation that Black women remain strong while still smiling and never losing our cool is one that many Black women have adopted, too.

So this week, when Simone Biles, the undisputed GOAT of gymnastics, decided not to continue participating in the team finals at the Olympics because her head wasn't in it, it was a powerful reminder that it's OK for Black women to take off our Superwoman capes.

Very serious question.

What percentage of adult Black women work?

As a ratio of income, that demographic spends more on self (cloths, accessories, being, 2 inch nails and hair) than any other in America and I dont think it is close.

Per the BLS, in 2018, about 10.3MM black women were in the work force. As of 2021, there are about 21.7MM black women in America. So my guess is the number is around 50%, with the majority of those working being single.

ETA: There are actually more black women than black men in the work force, as both a percentage of their respective demographic groups and in terms of raw numbers.

ETA 2: Additionally, a higher percentage of black women work than than white, Asian, or hispanic women.

Actually, the only things anyone expect from a black woman is to have kids out of wedlock and to send multiple items back at a restaurant.

And to be automatically judged negatively on TD.

She should worry less about other people and more about doing her job and not looking like an idiot on the world stage.

Thanks!

I knew more of them worked than black men but wasn't sure of the percentage.

I knew white women were slackers.

And that 21.7MM number is all black females, so the percentage of adult black women in the workforce is actually probably a good bit higher.

FFS, is there a more self-congratulatory group in America lately?
