Silencers and short barrel rifles are back on the menu

ATF announced that it will no longer be enforcing those restrictions.
My understanding is that now (state law permitting) you can walk into a store with your credit card and walk out with a silencer. Or silencers.

Yes, it depends on your state laws. Huge move in the right direction however.

I am not too familiar with SBRs, what should I be looking at the will not break the bank?

Yes it’s been like that for weeks or maybe a month now.

If you are in one of the “free” states like Louisiana and Texas you can take that silly “pistol brace” off the buffer extension tube and put a “stock” on it. Profit.

I think the stamp is no longer required.
Also no background check if you are exempt.

Yeah it’s been that way for a month, like I said.

That is incorrect. A background check is still performed with a standard firearm transfer form 4473.
So right now a suppressor is treated like any ole firearm.
The next step which could be a year or so away will be for the courts to redefine a suppressor as “not a firearm” and after that it will be like buying a scope or ammunition or a new trigger or bolt.

Ahh okay. My state allows purchasers with a CWP to skip the background check for firearms purchases.

No, your state allows you to skip the NICS check which is a means of complying with the background check requirements of the 1994 “Brady” bill, by using another acceptable background check process which is a check of your concealed carry permit. So you still have a background check, but it’s essentially a 10 second automated process of them swiping your CCP.

Makes sense
Be careful with short barrels rifles “SBR” though. The gun control act “GCA” of 1968 still prohibits the carrying of a SBR across state lines without submitted and receiving approval of an ATF form 20. But the ATF no longer regulates SBRs nor registers them. So what you do is before you cross a state line take off the butt stock off your AR pistol so that it crosses the state line as a “pistol” and then after you cross, you can put the stock back on at the next pit stop.

Any info on stores with a nice silencer selection in/near BR?

To what extent do supressors affect aim?
Posted on 10/11/26 at 7:35 pm to deeprig9
I’m not an expert. I can tell you a suppressed .22 running subsonic ammo sounds like a stapler.

Louisiana Firearms has some nice ones. They run a but higher but it’s convenient. I got a sparrow .22 for my ruger 10/22.

Unless you bumped your scope too hard when you were screwing the suppressor onto the end of the barrel, it won’t affect your aim.
It will affect point of impact though. So even if your gun is sighted in now, when you add the suppressor you will have to re-zero your sights/scope.

Sincere question…what happens if the next administration’s ATF wants to reinforce the tax stamp for suppressors? How would that be addressed?
I understand this issue is working through the federal courts and would assume it reaches SCOTUS before final rulings.

a future administration's DOJ can appeal this ruling and can put alot of folks in no-man's land if they reverse course (no laws have been changed under this ruling, the appelllate court can strike down the district court ruling). Hopefully, we'll get some permanent info soon

Lol. Just buy a lower and register it as an SBR. Throw and 11.5 upper in it and you're there.
All budget rifle vendors will likely be sold out of BR stock for months.
Get a K-can suppressor for it while you're at it. Those are going to be even harder to come by, prob for the next year

I’m not a lawyer, but this court injunction prohibiting the mandatory registration of SBRs, SBSs, and suppressors is permanent. The case cannot be appealed - that time allotted for appeal has elapsed. So a new law would have to be passed or a new case would have to be taken up in the courts that would potentially supersede this injunction.
