The military is being shrunk substantially, large personnel cuts are in progress. Carriers, Brigades, Air Wings are all being eliminated.

Cutting it 40%? Would you agree to social programs being cut 40% as well?

I like being the big dog. I don't neoconservative who are war mongers like McCain and King. I like the advances in tech that come from military spending. I don't like it's indiscriminate use. I like feeling safe from attack (relatively) but am tired of "protecting" others.

I say bring home the troops and put them on the border. Both sides should be happy right?

Strong Navy.

Strong Air Force.

Small Army.

Eliminate (or substantially reduce) the Marine Corp.

The world has changed. The era of gigantic standing armies is over. Either you adapt or you die.

I don't think the left wants the border protected. That eliminates some of their voting base...

The establishment right doesn't want the border policed either because they depend on the cheap labor. It's all of the people in the middle that want it secured.

But they keep screaming to bring the troops home.

I think the military industrial complex needs to be shrunk. I think we need to get out of the middle east. It's a cesspool and a money pit to stay over there. We can continue espionage of terrorists groups to prevent attacks but no reason to interfere with their Governments and take sides in civil wars.

I don't have a problem with keeping an eye on Japan, Germany, etc. Don't be naive and think that for one second those countries wouldn't build back up and try again if we allowed it to happen. The mindset is still prevalent over there

German culture shuns and is ashamed of their militaristic past. I doubt they would be any real threat. Japan, on the other hand...

Then I'm naive because I don't believe this for a second. Germany's economy is doing fairly well. Japan's has been going downhill for a while, but they are still a wealthy nation. Not to mention that more than 21% of it's population is over 65. Who is going to fight their war?

Germany has all of the power it wants (it essentially is the bank that controls the fiscal policy of the EU) and prefers to flex it's muscles via economic and monetary policy. Militarily, there is nothing that they could really accomplish with a large domestic military.

Japan, on the other hand, could very easily rally around the existential threat of China to jump start its economy around rebuilding its military and Nationalistic pride Mussolini style. They would have the capacity to become a massive threat towards stability in the Pacific rim within a decade and throw fuel into the fire for a massive arms race/cold war with China. Not necessarily a good thing.

I can assure you that you couldn't get half the right to agree with this.

The only thing that stops them from doing this is us. We are the security guarantor for many countries throughout the world. It would be a much scarier world if we were to withdraw, as several posters here suggest.
