Well you started off by separating time periods. I was just curious where that was.

No. Best option is secure the border and keep it contained in Mexico.
As long as the cartels don’t frick with our money or security then who cares?

The bigger question would be who would benefit the most, and that would be China.

Do you understand how trade works? How important certainty is with things like supply chains? If not you should sit this one out.

People in these discussions always seem to understate Mexico's size and economic situation when talking about just shutting the border or getting into a trade/economic war with the Mexicans. Mexico is top 10 in population and top 15 in GDP, and you already mentioned the enormous volume of trade across the border. It isn't quite the same thing as shutting off the tap to Cuba.

frick no. Didn't the first two decades of this century prove to you that playing whack-a-mole with insurgents doesn't work, and never will?

Would be an enormous waste of resources.

Bro, the war on drugs 2.0 will definitely work this time. Ignore anything you know about history or human nature.

By what you were quoting, I thought you were asking the date I considered that we became a “big gay post-Christian liberal ‘democracy’”.

I was not making specific claims on drug use in my replies to you.

My point relates to the here and now, because drug use here and now is why Mexico is a disaster. And I gave my opinion on the only thing that would change that.

In times past we could have us a big ol’ war to send the disaffected young men to, but those days are over because the state destroyed any common bonds we had to rile everyone up with propaganda. At best there would be half support and half vehement disagree.

Completely relevant to the costs of an open border with Mexico, and to the notion that Mexico is somehow some great ally. Allies don't shovel their shite across the border for decades and expect you to clean up the mess.

Waste of lives and spending for another 20 year occupation with little to no results.

Just do like Iran Contra and pick the winner winner chicken dinner cartel and task them with destroying all the cartels.

laredo is the busiest port in the country, without accounting for the drugs that come thru

shutting that down for a few hours would be a disaster.

for a board that whined about inflation for a few years, yall sure do love inflationary ideas

that they do

so lets look at the real problem outside of demand from the US(there will always be some type of supply)

the main reason people join the cartels is because of money...period

so how do you encourage them to not join

1) make mexico much more of an economic power house. This does 2 things...it slows people and drugs coming over the border because it gives them opportunities at home

- how do we accomplish this...you bring as much of the asia manufacturing base to mexico as possible of the next decade or two. All indian manufacturing, much of the chinese, and much of the chip manufacturing in taiwan.

2) you seal the southern boarder and take back the canal.
3) you declare them terrorist and seize all assets you can
4) make strategic military strikes using drones and spec ops to hit leadership
5) you get friendly leadership into the president's palace and work with them on this vision.

but you can not nation build, you can not stop the demand(somewhat) and people are always goign to chase money. If you give them options..it works best in the long term

but overall number 1 step is militarize the southern border using mainly reserve units. the 2 weeks they must do...use them there. Same with the NG in those states. You will have to have regular military as the head but from there, you can supplement with guard and reserves.

2nd thing is terror designation and hitting the leadership, cutting the head off the snake.

at the same time you start working economic plans. All manufacturing in east asia that can come back to the US...do it, what cant...send to mexico and help them through economic incentives and knowledge.

you then work with government and do exactly what el salvidor did. if you are associated with a cartel...you scoop them up. spec ops can help.

SFP is right that you cant just cut the head off and think you are good, doesnt work that away and he is right in that Iraq and Afgan shows that.

you have to provide....freedom, education, economic opportunity.

but if you hit them strategically, seal the border, freeze as many assets as possible...it slows it down big time. have to work on this side of the border too.

All these people smacking SFP around are almost certainly going after the messenger more than the message.

If you are in any way in favor of this, let me ask you one question: Are you ready to send your boy there to do the fighting?
