.Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin Indicted in Alleged Ivy League Bribery Scheme

quote:

Desperate Housewives vet Felicity Huffman and Fuller House‘s Lori Loughlin have been indicted for allegedly taking part in a large scheme involving parents who paid bribes of up to $6 million to get their kids into elite colleges, including Harvard and Yale, ABC News is reporting. The indictment was filed by the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts; the documents were unsealed early Tuesday. Other schools involved include Yale, Stanford, Georgetown and the University of Southern California. In total, roughly 50 individuals — including Loughlin’s husband, Mossimo Giannulli — have been charged.

I didn’t know that was against the law. I pretty much assumed all rich folks made “donations” to get their kids into the Ive Leagues.

This case might make some universities pretty nervous.

I'm assuming this is only against the law because of their non-profit status?

Is it a bribe or is it "an alternative enrollment path"?

If I tell you that the steps to get into the university are a, b, and c, and fail to disclose an alternative method, it is call fraud.

Fraud is generally a misrepresentation or suppression of the truth...

Fraud happens all the time, but out corrupt system simply allows it.

You need to read the details. It wasn't just donations. They hired a guy who then contacted the universities and he paid off the coaches to pretend the kids were on sports teams, then he paid off the SAT / ACT folks to either change scores, change answers or pay someone to take the test for the kids.

This isn't a case of parents donating the new wing of a building to the school. It was cheating on both the grades and lying about being student aesthetes to get into the school. And on top of that, some standard university bribery.

Yep, parents donating money to a school to get their kids in is nothing new.

These accusations are beyond that and go into explicit fraud. Fake athletic records to get undeserved athletic scholarships, having proxies take SAT/ACT tests, real shady shite.

if the "private" universities accept any federal funding, this is another reason it' a crime. It's defrauding the federal funding system for universities.

Loughlin and Giannulli allegedly paid a total of $500,000 so that their two daughters would be designated as recruits to the USC crew team. Neither girl participated in the sport. Athletic recruits have a much better chance of admission than students who are not recruited.
This just seems pointless and a waste of money. Of course, athletic recruits have a better chance of admission when teams when them in their teams. But does someone on a recruit list, really get preference for a non-revenue sport that has the team has no intention to include on their team?

Just because someone at an institution that receives federal funding commits fraud, doesn’t mean they are defrauding the United States government. There is a big difference between creating fraudulent data for a research grant or altering Title IX reports than some employee taking bribes and potentially fraudulently altering something.

It sounds like they weren’t even getting scholarships, they were just getting on a recruiting list. And I’m not convinced that it would actually help since a star football or basketball recruit getting preferential admission is not the same as some rowing recruit that doesn’t have an actually offer to be on the team.

having proxies take SAT/ACT tests
But that probably has nothing to do with the university since those are handled by outside testing organizations.

They set up a charity and funneled it thru that and wrote it off their income tax. THAT's illegal. Plus bribing public officials. If you want to bribe public officials become a lobbyist.
