This is already illegal. It happens pretty rarely. Most docs won’t even meet with pharma reps, so there’s no way they could negotiate a payoff.

There used to be a database that you could go and see all your doctor’s financial consideration from a medical vendor down to increments of $10. May still be around.

Pharma companies’ Marketing is a victim of its own inanities. Doctors getting new golf clubs for writing Claritin or taking a trip to the Bahamas to learn about Zithromax was never going to last.

It doesn’t. I’ve seen it happen. But it’s a very minor exception. Not worth the risk these days.

If pharmaceuticals can only be prescribed by licensed dr’s, why are the commercials show to the public at all?

I am in favor of more drugs being OTC (just about everything but narcotics and antibiotics)

So advertising is OK with me.

How so?
Prescribing diabetics insulin is not helping their diabetes. It's just pouring on more poison to cover the problem. We KNOW that Type II diabetes is addressable (and even reversible) with diet. Yet the powers that be and the drug companies are STILL prescribing diabetes-inducing diets as diabetes friendly.

Most of the same for CVD and statins/diet.

NO!

The patient must not be empowered.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Are you telling me I DON'T really have an overactive bladder, restless leg syndrome, Fibromyalgia, or the horrible condition that afflicts Danny Glover where he and I can't stop laughing

That’s mostly a patient choice issue. Given the choice of changing their diet or not, most patients won’t change.

This has been my experience. It is frustrating as hell, we just keep trying and treating the results.

True, but we should also acknowlege the fact that a lot of doctors will not address these items with patients. Instead they will discuss medication. Maybe I'll go look it up, but I think it was from Circulation, they looked at what doctors discussed / prescribed with patients. It was a very low number, like 15% or something, that talked to them about diet and exercise.

Because patients are the ones who take the meds, are the ones to benefit from the meds and who will suffer any side effects from the meds. Why on earth would I want my doctor to be the only one educated about it?

You are saying commercials educate you on the drug?

Big Pharm firmly believes that this TV advertising that they do to be effective in boosting sales. In other words, they must have some evidence that Joe Six Pack sees the Boner Ads and goes to the Doc asking for Boner Pills.

Stroke from AHA published way back in 2002 that 85% of those with stroke history and 80% without received dietary counseling and 76% and 70% for exercise.

Will await your data.

I don’t believe this to be accurate. Over half of obese people are told by doctors to increase their exercise/physical activity when they visit their doctor. Same with patients with diabetes.
