That would fall under "government business" and given your scenario I don't think anyone would object to using gov't jets in that instance. The OP said "personal trips", idiot. Why do you people create straw men and exaggerate the opposing view's side constantly?

So heading to the Belmont Stakes with his daughters and their boyfriends is a SHTF situation?

“These luxury jets were supposedly needed for counterterrorism, but it turns out that they were used almost two-thirds of the time for jet-setting executive travel,” Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley said. “Nobody disputes that the Attorney General and the FBI Director should have access to the secure communications, but, for instance, there’s no reason they can’t take a less expensive mode of transportation, or cut their personal travel.”

Please don't call me an idiot.

If you cant follow my line of thinking, it reflects poorly on you.

Moron.

This is no strawman. Cabinet level people take govt jets to private travel because they need to be available to do the govt business:

1) at a moments notice
2) in a secure manner

Additionally, in the world we live in, the security afforded is necessary while they are in office. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Please try to keep up, MORON.

I'm amazed that this far into the discussion, which as usual has been made into a partisan issue that it hasn't even been mentioned that the article was based on a report from the GAO.

Just shows how far we've swallowed the bait they dangled in front of us.

Well, that is why this has devolved into a partisan issue.

The thread title reads, "Should Gov't officials be able to use tax payer jets for personal trips?"

Would the opinions be different if this was Rummy, during the Iraq war? Typically, people let a picture of Holder cloud their judgement.

Lets be honest, if Holder was flying commercial everyone would bitch about how annoying it was when he ended up on your plane.

I'm sure I could find things to cut out of flights for cabinet members, but it's just the most natural solution.

Holder is a lightning rod, and the intent of using him is clear. I do not disagree. But the bottom line, this has been going on for much too long and the "we reimbursed the cost of the flight" excuse is disgusting. With the exception of the President, Vice President, and Secretary of Defense, no one should be permitted to use government aircraft for personal trips. Only those three have a need to be in constant, secure communications.

I realize I am overstating my case, but this abuse just rankles me. And it is not limited to any particular political party, it is rife within Washington DC with their elitist mentality.

I follow your line of thinking. You think gov't officials should take a gov't jet to the Belmont Stakes on a personal jaunt just in case there's a phone outage. I get it. It's because I disagree with you that I'm not a moron.

Personal use is a big no. As far as government use, yes and no. Need I remind people that during the auto bail out, the ceos were criticized for using corporate jets to fly them to dc yet with trillion dollar deficits, the government thinks nothing of using tax payer paid jets. Something wrong with that picture.

Maybe some very high level people like the Pres., VP, SECDEF, Sec of State. The rest of the cabinet positions can EAD.

I can see the AG, FBI, and CIA directors as well (and probably a few others I am missing). Others, sec of interior, agriculture, education, etc; they can fly commercial. I can't see the same security concerns.

Glad to see the debate has morphed to a "Which Govt. officials should use Govt. planes for personal trips" debate.

And BTW pretty much any SHTF event for the President is a SHTF event for the AG. The AG is THE principle legal advisor for the office of the President. You do want your President to act within the confines of the LAW don't you?

(Pardon the shameless flame)

Disagree. There are certain levels of service where this is warranted. Atty Gnrl is one. All Cabinet level positions, IMHO....

We need these guys safe and available at all times... It's in the interest of the USA.

pelosi had a 365,000 a year bar tab while in the air as Speaker.
