It’s not easy, but the church of Scientology is a good case study.
How? The people that draw income from it is liable for income tax and the church, or themselves personally, is due employment tax on the income as well.
Just because you start a church doesn’t mean you have a tax free income stream.

Any church that goes political in the pulpit or gets involved in elections (taking folks to the polls etc) needs to be taxed. IMO at that point theyve elected ended their separation of church and state

Churches are running real estate scams in every county in this country.
Well let’s solve this.. when tithes to a small church are small, and there has been some unexpected expenses, and the property tax lapses.
Who forecloses on the tax lien? The government?? Well… what about this separation of church and state we keep hearing screamed out when a teacher wears a cross on their necklace? We going to revisit that? Start putting religion back in schools? Hey.. they are paying taxes that go to the schools now. You can’t have a one way street. It’s all or nothing.
You don’t think those muny grabbin, real estate swindlin, churches may have some extra cash to start throwing around and putting religious curriculum in schools?
Maybe the superintendent, principals, and teachers go to some of these churches and can help the process of installing Bible study in schools, maybe even a prayer before meals.
You want that?

Should churches be taxed?
If no, then no. . .don't tax churches.
They have enough power as is.

Yes Goodwill as a company makes billions but the local Goodwill where I live makes just enough to keep the doors open.
This is an outlet which is where all the items go when they aren't bought at the store.
They are put in these long blue bins from the tipper and pushed out on the floor.
Resellers spend yes I'm not joking a full shift finding items dirt cheap and flip them online.

non-profit != doesn’t make money. I know one “non-profit” that tallies up how much money they have left at the end of the year and spits it up between employees. They make a killing.

I have already paid taxes on the money I tithe.
Presumably you've already paid taxes on the money you spend on cheap Chinese crap from Wal Mart, too. Should WalMart be tax-exempt?

Separation of church and state means that churches should be treated as any other entity. Carving out special dispensations isn't separation.

Why not tax em
Because that’s the ways it’s always been. We are a judeo-Christian based country. Plus taxes are at an all time high thanks to inflation, so they do not need anymore taxes. They need to control their spending.

Separation of Church and State should means that I shouldn't pay a higher property tax burden because churches don't pay a nickel. I'm subsidizing their exempt status on my properties because their real estate values don't populate into the county's real estate property assessments to get calculated for millages.
Every property owner is picking up the burden for the exempt parcels.

I encourage you to read the entire summary of the Supreme Court Case of Walz v. Tax Commission of the City of New York, including the precedents considered, and come back and explain the legality of your claim.

Didn’t answer the question.
You wanna revisit separation of church and state if you can get your tax munny??

“Any church that goes political in the pulpit or gets “
Was under the impression this was already an actual law in existence… was at one time… idk about now
But yeah I would love to see the irs walk up to a few of the churches with a recorded comment from the leader preaching politics and say btw here is your years tax bill….
They get around it by using “stories” from wherever to make their suggestions without saying go vote for x or y…

So you are upset that you are having to pay more taxes to make up the slack of others who don’t pay taxes, and you think churches are the problem? Lol

If they paid taxes and every entity, not just churches then my tax burden would be lower.
So what about other people/entities that do not pay taxes or receive handouts from the government?

This would guarantee ALL churches run like business. Only the big business ones would survive
True. Design a revenue/tax exemption ceiling cap based on congregation tiers by volume.
Can't squeeze out the smaller churches, but we sure need to tax these giants that are running as a business first and foremost then as a place of worship.
