I’m from Memphis and live there now, it’s been this way for my whole life (32 years) and won’t be getting any better. Our Rep is Chicken Little Cohen- and he is an accurate representation of the city.
The dems own the city, and the suburbs don’t decide what happens in the city and vice versa. The burbs have their own government, police/fire/trash and school systems.
Like others have said, it’s amazing the GOP had the DA to begin with. It’s back to business as usual. And yes, the local party sucks eggs.
I'm 44 and although I live in DeSoto county now, I was born and raised in Memphis and Shelby County. The GOP ran that place for a long time. But people decided to flee instead of staying and fighting. The Shelby County government was run by the GOP for a very long time. I mean the last county mayor was GOP (2010 - 2018). Bill Morris was technically a Democrat but would be a Republican today and he was mayor from 1978 - 1994. Rout was GOP and was mayor from 1994 - 2004. The liberal Dems holding even that office has been a very recent thing.

I missed the most recent years at college and working out of state. Honest question, was the city heading in the right direction then? Was the city council also GOP? Was crime and education improving under GOP leadership? Or was is the same inept corrupt government that it is now?
For as long as I can remember, we’ve been on the decline, besides a few glimpses of hope.
TBH, some things in Memphis seem much better since I moved back in 2019, but it’s the same uneducated, crime ridden, corrupt city it’s always seemed to be to me
Edit: I still like living here and think the city is better than when I left. Though my family moved back to Louisiana (where we are originally from), I still have lots of lifelong friends, enjoy the golf in the area, like the new one concourse airport (haha), and some fun parts of the city.

It improved a little after Herenton was out of office, but I think that over the past couple of years it's gotten about back to where it was. The GOP county government slowed the bleeding somewhat but it was still bleeding. Education was decent in the county schools but that ended when the school systems merged and ultimately the county schools' (successful) officials were replaced by the city schools' (failing) officials.

As a lifelong republican living in Shelby county, let me be the first to say, frick Any Weirich. I hate that bitch and would never vote for her. If that means a dem gets elected, so be it. Next go round at least a real republican can run against her

Weirich is not a great DA, but I can't stand Mulroy.

What are its demographics? That place is run by the Dems already. A client tried to get a black female Dem elected for Congress due his corporate office a much of his manufacturing are there. Cohen won re-electing in a landslide

You realize this is tantamount to telling the people of Jackson Mississippi to get their shite together, right?

The Shelby County GOP has been worthless for at least a decade. I blame David Kustoff. When he was the local chairman, it became toothless and a bunch of elitist, cliquish country clubbers. There is NO outreach to young Republicans. New blood is not welcome. Pathetic really.

You shocked me by the statement that Shelby County, TN had any countywide elected Republican...
