If you didn’t act like the flu was just the flu there would be less flu deaths as well. But we don’t shut down the economy for the flu do we?

And if all this were working, why are we seeing new flu cases every day? EVERY SINGLE DAY. And it's been steady. People are scared to come to our office where we won't allow people in with any respiratory symptoms, exceed CDC recommendations, minimize the number of people in the office and space them out, no more than one person and a family member or driver in a waiting room at a time etc. Yet Walmart, Brookshire's etc. don't. Or gas stations, or Hobby Lobby that's still open.

So don't let people fool you, these measures are failing. The virus isn't spreading faster because of natural factors, not these half arse measures.

And that's also overlooked by most. In the scenario where '19 is substantially worse than a difficult influenza, it's fantasy to think this cake isn't mostly baked. No government overreaching, public overreacting or GDP cratering can make up for the years of planning for a pandemic that was not bothered with so we could obsess about how many genders there are.

Do you under stand there are 8 billion people on the planet and 350 million in America. 10 million people is 0.125% of people. That's nothing. Put shite into perspective.

More people have had the flu and died from it. Nothing interrupted.

Vast majority of those dying were at risk regardless. This thing attacks the weak.

We need shutdowns in known hotpots with those at risk elsewhere to take precautions. No need whatsoever for all the hysterics.

We do? We have what we think is a preventative shot but no true vaccines

If you consider a 30% effective rate as being viable I guess we do.

You'd have to be foolish at this point to think we don't hit 12K dead
again, this is not a fact. this is scare tactics. especially in light of the fact that today the cdc was DEFINITELY crawfishing on the numbers

It's stunning how a 2 wk shutdown has caused some folks to lose their fricking minds
um, have you examined the economy that supports the hospitals? it ain't rosy. this response is unsustainable.

If that’s the case why weren’t our hospitals overrun with an unrecognized respiratory virus for the last few months
oh my word. first, the majority of people who get infected have no symptoms. the hospitals wouldn't be "overrun." second, plenty of people in the medical community are saying there WAS problem with unspecified respiratory problems. third, the hospitals aren't overrun NOW. not even in the hotspots.

Italy has 18% of our population and they will likely hit the 12k death toll in the next 4-5 days
why do people keep using italy as a barometer? they are the worst hotspot in the world. good grief what is wrong with people.

NOLA area
nola icu's are not overrun. they are absolutely stressed. but nola is one of the worst hotspots in the entire world. even so, it is not an out of control situation. moreover, if this shutdown continues, the icu's that libs are screaming about will REALLY collapse - for everyone. not just a handful of elderly people

i can't seem to get this across to people. as soon as i hit enter, i get the response BUT THE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH which has nothing to do with the context, particulars and variables. there is a sensible response in between doing nothing and shutting entire industries down.

I was responding to someone who said they would take Corona seriously when it hit H1N1 numbers - which killed 12k in the USA in an entire season.

I used Italy because they are about 2-3 week ahead of the States and a lot of other places in terms of when the virus really began to spread and take hold. Over 12k have died in 30 days in Italy.

Sorry if the truth hurts.

I am curious to find out if the flu death rate goes up or down or stays the same during all this
