SARS vaccine could have been a template, but was shelved by Big Pharma

Because other projects had higher return on investment.
Now I’m not saying socialism is the answer but how can we blindly worship free market economics when the profit motive is costing lives and livelihoods?

Because capitalism is built on profits and hindsight is 20/20? They’re probably kicking themselves for missing out because of it.
Communist.
Communist.

quote:SARS wasn't that big of a deal. Why would any company be expected to invest millions upon millions in a vaccine that nobody could predict when it would be needed again. The money went to other drug development. This is not a big story or black eye for "big pharma."
More than a decade had passed since the viral disease known as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, had spread through China, killing more than 770 people

Instead of focusing on profits and shareholder value, focus on what betters mankind the most.
It’s not hindsight: there were many experts back then warning of the threat posed by coronaviruses and the need to develop a vaccination strategy for that family of viruses.

Did you read the article?
“Early efforts to develop a SARS vaccine in animal trials were plagued by a phenomenon known as "vaccine-induced enhancement," in which recipients exhibit worse symptoms after being injected — something Fauci said researchers must be mindful of as they work to quickly develop a vaccine to protect against COVID-19.“
I would think they would shelf a ‘vaccine’ that enhances the pathogen instead of the immune system defense. Fauci is correct being cautious more than derp do Anything and everything!?!.
....you have to make sure what you are doing in response to a disease doesn’t worsen the situation. You may as well resort to bloodletting for anemics with that level of medical understanding.

Also a pertinent question regarding antibiotics in general.

El oh fricking el.
Obama blew off swine flu like the rest of the country did. Now all of a sudden because a company didn't invest millions into a potentially worthless vaccine it's their fault? frick right off with that shite, liberal.

There’s 3,000,000 current arguments staring you in the face for capitalist-based healthcare. And you’re arguing this? What Reddit did this shite garbage argument come from?

The intersection of capitalism and health care is imperfect. Another example is when Pharmaceutical companies respond to patent law by releasing "combination" drugs instead of developing new antibiotics.
Capitalism is a field of play and businesses are the players. Trying to figure out who is a player, who is a ref, and what constitutes the field of play is critical to getting things right.
Things that we need to function like utilities should be classified, regulated, and operated as such.

Didn't stop them from making the HPV vaccine.

I have an idea. We can take that $3 billion we give to Israel every year and use it to fund needed but unprofitable medicines instead of paying them to commit espionage against us and sell our technology to adversarial foreign countries.

Now tell what they should spend money on for 10 years from now

Without the benefit of hindsight, would a vaccine for a one-time virus that killed 770 people be more valuable than the other projects they developed over the past 17 years?

LOL if you think we would have this vaccine if we had socialism.
If we had socialism we wouldn’t have 95% of the drugs/vaccines we have today and wde’d be rationing care.
So yeah be thankful for capitalism, it ain’t perfect but it’s the best we got.
