Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry is back at the State Capitol, pushing for a bill that would order a study of psychedelic drugs to treat post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans.

House Bill 1802 would create a study evaluating the safety and efficacy of certain psychedelic drugs in the treatment of PTSD in vets. According to The Texas Tribune, the bill would direct the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to conduct the clinical study of psilocybin in partnership with a health sciences university and a Veterans Affairs hospital. Psilocybin is the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms."

quote:

"I'm a great example of a fairly conservative elected official who is against drugs in any form," said Perry. "Back in 2013, I had a mother come in and visit with me about the medical use of marijuana. I was against that. But she came in and she showed me where her young son could ... get over these epileptic seizures by the use of this compound that was overseen medically, appropriately dosed, and that's what we're talking about here with this compound of psilocybin in a clinical trial environment. With the right medical oversight, the right diagnosis, the right dosing ... working them through this experience and then the right follow-up ... these compounds are different than no other compound that we would have in our arsenal. If you will use it properly, it can save lives."

Perry closed thanking the veterans and their families for joining them, and opened the floor for them to share their experiences.

"The potential science that is going to come out of this, I will suggest to you, is going to have an effect across our populations," he added. "Whether it's a young lady who plays soccer, who's being concussed multiple times, and whether it's an individual who has been sexually assaulted and the post-traumatic stress that occurs to that individual, the idea that we have in our hands, a way to positively affect their future, is a powerful thing. And I hope the members of the legislature take this opportunity, they go forward with it and we very loudly and proudly, if you will, share with the rest of the world what Texas is doing for its veterans."

Can't happen soon enough and is an incredibly positive sign that Texas is potentially going this direction.

Update 5/20 - Bill passes Senate committee and is headed for a vote:

quote:

Senate Committee for Veteran’s Affairs and Border Security passed that bill to study using magic mushrooms to treat post traumatic stress disorder. Now, the Senate will vote on the measure. The committee met on Wednesday morning. Members listened to testimony on House Bill 1802 and then approved the measure. The bill would allow for a study on the use of alternative therapies for treating post traumatic stress disorder.

Anyone who has been in a major US city has seen a veteran on psychedelic drugs.

He's has to making something off of it, just like when he pushed the HPV "vaccine" through for kids.

Rick Perry has serious connections with some major K Street players, so you are probably onto something here.

Without those insufferable people YOU are nothing pal. You wouldn't exist if these people weren't fighting for YOU! Please choose better words. Anyone who serves to protect me and you can bitch and moan all they want. They have seen things that you and I will never see even in our worst nightmares.

PTSD is often the result of a brain injury.

I have not served in the Military. I’m not a doctor, or a psychiatrist or a counselor. I’ve also never used psychedelic drugs.

I do, however, believe that the treatment (or lack thereof) for mental health, particularly treatment available for our veterans on this important issue - is lacking.

Can someone please explain why psychedelic drugs are helpful to someone suffering from PTSD- who by definition is already reliving painful past experiences, especially when triggered?

There is some interesting research on psychedelics. Jordan Peterson discusses them in several of his earlier podcasts.

It is definitely worth doing more research.

I'm an OEF X Veteran, 3ID out of Ft. Stewart. I ETS'd in 2012.

I'm sure my experiences are both better and worse than others, so I operate with that perspective. I can't watch something about Kyle Carpenter or other Soldiers/Sailors/Airmen/Marines who've given or come close to giving the ultimate sacrifice without getting chills and teary-eyed.

I had my first acid trip around this time last year and it was eye-opening and helped me come to terms with a lot of stuff I've experienced. All I can really say. It helped me.

I've never served.

That being said, psychedelics have made me better off.

I make sure to go on a fun trip 3 to 4 times a year. It truly puts me in a better mood all around. Its like knowing the punch line to a joke no one else can hear.

Explain in detail, exactly how the permanent occupation of some 3rd world hellhole in some Godforsaken sandpit of vipers advances my Liberty or allows me to exist? I’ll be polite and leave it at this: it is a rhetorical question and the answer is your entire proposition is absurd.
