Republicans say Marco Rubio’s bill is the way for Congress to deter Russian meddling

Conservatives are lining up behind Marco Rubio’s plan to automatically sanction Russia for any future election meddling a day after President Donald Trump’s meeting in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin drew widespread derision from the entire political spectrum.
Trump supporters like Fox News host Laura Ingraham, moderates like Miami Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Senate leaders like Mitch McConnell have all expressed support for Rubio’s bill, signaling that Congress could pass substantive legislation that would swiftly punish Moscow if U.S. intelligence determines that the Kremlin tries to meddle in future U.S. elections.

Rubio and Van Hollen’s bill, called the Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines (DETER) Act, is the first bill since the 2016 presidential election that sets specific punishments for the Russian government and other countries that interfere in U.S. political campaigns.
“Congress has already taken various steps when it comes to Russia and its interference in 2016, this will just be one moving forward that hopefully would deter future attacks, which I believe is the real threat here ultimately,” Rubio said on Tuesday. “It’s not what happened, but what could happen in the future. Hopefully we’ll get to a critical mass and momentum that we can get going on it and get it passed.”

Marco once again is creating substantive policy while everyone else on the hill is only blowing hot air. Marco understands what is at stake. Marco is one of the last uncompromised Patriots.

Is this a joke?? As one of his constituents, I hope he has a serious conservative challenger during his next election campaign. Man, I seriously thought this guy was genuine. But, alas he caved to the Swamp and I do not trust me.

I too believe Rubio has become a touch swampy but I have no issues with this legislation. Need to read it first of course.

Oh Little Marco.
Who decides what is "meddling?" Who assures that the IC didn't get their intel wrong, again?
This is just another knee jerk reaction to something. I wish Republicans would just have the balls to come out and say "look in a free society, asshats like Putin are going to take advantage of platforms like FaceBook to feed Americans propaganda, there is only real defense here, EDUCATE YOURSELVES MORONS"
As for hacking, What bill did Marco Rubio propose in 2014 when China was caught red handed hacking the OPG? Oh that's right, none.
How about this for a bill "The United States will regard ANY attempt to hack into USG computer systems to be an act of war and the President will immediately be authorized by Congress to respond militarily using his own discretion as to the amount of force to be used?"

Outside of the fact this is kind of stupid. The “meddling” was determined to not influence the election; therefore, just ignore it unless it actually presents a problem.
Are we also going to hold ourselves to the same standard and not mess with other peoples’ elections?

Bo doubt, this bill is akin to if Congress in the early 1800s would have proposed a bill punishing any country who's government went about exterminating the native people of their land lol
