Why? The teacher has most likely done more good for their local community than your standard military grunt.

(again a caveat that I am a teacher)
There are many great hard-working teachers and there are also many who are lazy, incompetent, stupid, and more interested in spreading their marxist ideas.
I was embarrassed by the outpouring of praise for the bravery and heroism of teachers when we went back to school in person last year. (not all did but mine did and I taught in person and remote simultaneously). Many teachers unions protested and demanded all virtual school again, and refused to go back to work without some ridiculous safety measures. By that point in Sept. 2020, grocery store workers and other essential workers had been working through the past 4 months as always every day. Teachers acted like giant babies.

Have you seen inner city middle and high schools lately?
They call it 'combat pay'. Your primary job is to make sure no violence happens in your class. If you can actually teach something it's all frosting on the cake.

But both are providing a service to the community and should be thanked for their service
Unfortunately, like so much else at the University level, education departments have completely abandoned their actual function in favor of liberal indoctrination and it is now festering in our schools.
As a father of 3, with the last two a decade after the first, my experience has been consistent. The vast majority of teachers view themselves as working against me.
Which is sad really because very few parents make as much effort as I do to ensure my children follow thru on their assignments, to assist my children when they need it and communicates with teachers more often to ensure we are on the same page.
Most parents have no idea how much teachers truly hate them.

I’d rather storm the beach and maybe die a hero than spend my life around small children.
I know you say this in jest, but comparing the two, even in jest, is not something I would do.
I served in the military, and have been in education for decades. The two aren’t remotely comparable in my experience.
