Regarding the bill: this board has no idea what is happening in people’s lives right now

quote:

~85-90% of the bill consists of 3 things:

1) Checks for Americans
2) Enhanced unemployment insurance to help those losing their jobs.
3) Help for businesses to stay afloat & keep on employees via loans & tax credits.

Almost everyone agrees on that 85-90% and knows it is desperately needed ASAP to keep economy alive.

Other stuff:

~100 billion for hospitals, ~$150 billion for state and local governments, tax breaks etc.

And there are some questionable provisions.

You're going to find some bad or questionable provisions in the other ~10%. That's inevitable in a bill like this, but it's actually a very small amount and many are explainable.

Meanwhile the 90% is needed urgently to prevent a total economic collapse.

This is an easy call.

The above is a quote from a conservative commentator, but one that understands the gravity of the situation.

There are people who will not get a paycheck today. Because of government actions and ordinances

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good

99% of this board doesn’t work at a job that has been cut or hours reduced, but soooo many Americans work at jobs like that and they need immediate help

Pass the bill. ASAP

Our economy would collapse without it.

I will be supporting Thomas Massie’s primary challenger, one of the lawyers who helped the Covington boys.

I agree it's far from perfect. But now is not the time to be an ideologue.

Trump acknowleged this on Twitter. He said they had to give up some stupid stuff with the Dems For the bigger picture but 90% of the bill is great.

Nice to see some compassionate and common sense on this board.

I upvoted. you can argue the necessity of the shutdown all day but the bottom line is the government broke this, whether justified or not, and must at least attempt to make people whole

That's $200 billion in waste, at least, PLUS the 5-7 percent that will be lost to fraud. The fact that is "inevitable" is fricking bullshite.

2T is ultimately less than what we would have to pay if we went into a depression which this bill will forestall.

None of us love endless governmental expenditures, as they often run counter to our core ideological positions.

But none of this is theoretically new, and this is the most morally justifiable example of fiscally-imprudent government largesse I've seen, probably.

My main thing is that they should have just done the checks more and not done as much for unemployment beefing up. Let people get money and still look for jobs.

Plus a bunch of people think they will get more from unemployment than they will. Leading them to think they will get paid more for not working as opposed to working

I agree. There is no way we can have all these mandated closings without some form of compensation.

The impact to the economy would cost far more if we did nothing.

You're going into a depression. If they don't stop producing some raw materials, they'll even go to zero and negative in price as there won't be anywhere to store them.

All these nutjobs better think of what that is going to look like.

Passing the bill with the Dems added fluff that has absolutely nothing to do with the virus only makes them look worse so I have no problem at all with it getting passed. It shines a spotlight on their true colors.

We can dispute the wisdom/extent of the UE measures...

But I will say that certain sectors are getting killed by this in an effort to benefit all of us. They're (involuntarily) sacrificing for the greater good. While some should have saved, been more responsible, etc. - some that did those things are still hurting. Moreover, this isn't the type of "rainy day" situation most plan for. It's unprecedented and will be one of the most significant events in many of our lives.

Well he's a RINO so that's not out of character for you Hail.

I support Massie push for accountability for politicians who want to pass this massive spending bill with tons of pork in it and force them to put their names on it. This is not the usual run of the mill bill like naming a post office.

A politician trying to avoid accountability should be looked at with a wary eye at best and despised at worst.
