My granddaughter, whom we have raised since she was exactly 1 year old, is wanting to join the military. She is currently a nursing student, but she has leaned toward joining the military for several years. She's a little wisp of a girl, maybe 110 lbs. soaking wet. Naturally, I'm concerned about her welfare and safety, but it is her life and her future. What right do I have in steering her either direction? Oddly, she wants to be an MP and pursue a career in law enforcement. With the current administration and CIC that we have, I am even more torn on her potential joining. She's my baby girl and I just want what is best for her. Anyone else on the board been through something like this and what are your thoughts and experiences in dealing with it? TIA!

Currently I would do my best to steer away from this

quote:

join the military.

And I would definitely tell her to stay clear of this

quote:

career in law enforcement.

Well you can share Major Smedley Butler’s short book “war is a racket” and see if she really wants to potentially blow up brown ppl so others can get rich. It’s a quick read.

I tend to advise you guns not to get their parts blown off so that the Pelosi’s and Schumer’s of the world can get rich.

She'll be fine with whatever branch she joins, although, MPs are hated throughout the ranks. You hardly notice the current administration (besides budget). A 4 year stint in the military will give her the direction she needs if she has none right now.

Good profession, lots of potential. I could definitely help her with that if she was interested in the Army.

Congrats, granddad, sounds like you have raised her well. For me, it's a conundrum. I would never imagine discouraging my child (or grandchild) from joining the military. However, with the current leadership and direction of the country, I would be torn. Definitely something to pray about. I would probably be more concerned for her well-being with joining law enforcement, but we need courageous people now more than ever to handle the worst job in the country.

Either way, she will land on her feet.

Don't do MP, she'll quickly be disenchanted with LE in the future.
If she wants LE don't do it in the military.

Nursing is a solid avenue in the military. Better than outside the mil.

ask her why shes studying nursing?

she can get a commission and do nursing.

get her into a dojo that teaches both aikido and karate.
after that white belt in aikido mix it up with 15 yr old black belt boys.
she will comprehend the dumbassery of MP for a smallish female.

if she wants law she goes to law school after she passes the nurse boards.

she needs pranayama. grounding breath work. the aikido will help.

Surprisingly (and oddly) most law enforcement agencies do not want former MPs because of how much they have to "unlearn".

The primary function of the Military Police branch is NOT law enforcement, it's security.

As a former MP, there were height and weight requirements for MP's for both male and female (that was in the early 80's) So being a tiny little thing may or may not work in your favor if these rules are still in effect.

The role MP's were playing was just starting to evolve when I left in '98. Shortly after that they collapsed MP's (95B) and Corrections NCO's (95c) into 31A. With a bigger push to go from dual role to one with a lot less law enforcement to far more of a Combat Support role. Supply route recon, area security, POW ops, stuff like that.

Not sure if that helps or makes it worse for you. But Kudo's to your Granddaughter!

For me personally, I found that just the opposite was true.

i served in the marines from 1993 to 2001 and i would strongly advise anyone to really consider going another route in todays world.

never did law enforcement, but would also consider another path.

why? because as much as we need patriots and strong LEO's out there, in today's current climate, its a no win situation. if you're white, and male, you'll be made the example, and be passed over at every opportunity, or be a racists regardless of the scenario.......she's a girl, so she has that going for her, but with biden's changing of the military, i'd run from it. just 5 years ago, i'd say go for the military experience. and never would i suggest running from a challenge or a chance to defend the country......but right now it just a bad deal for a certain demographic or two.

stick to nursing..........if you're giving advice to her.

I was a recruiter

quote:

Naturally, I'm concerned about her welfare and safety, but it is her life and her future.

You should be concerned and good for you looking into it.

quote:

Oddly, she wants to be an MP

Don't do this, if you want to

quote:

pursue a career in law enforcement

Any military service will satisfy and most departments don't like prior MP.

quote:

With the current administration and CIC that we have, I am even more torn on her potential joining.

It is certainly something to think about, but I served under Obama and have multiple deployments, if you're in the military you'll do what they say, so it should be a concern, but not. Especially for a MP - if that's what's chosen.

Edit.

Oh, you may want to look into law enforcement, my father is an elected sheriff and he's thinking about not running again and retiring. Police are treated like shite and states are taking away qualified immunity, see IL bill that just passed.

Finish Nursing school, be a military nurse, and get the military to pay off any loans that she might have. From what I gather, the medical service in the military is pretty casual. More like a hospital or doctor's office than a military unit.

Career Army here...nurses make plenty on the outside with tons of flexibility, wouldn't recommend joining unless it was the Air Force for a short stint.

Another issue with LE in the military...

Other than infantry and services (cooks, etc.)...military police have the lowest Asvab scores...
Asvab is an IQ test so she'll be mixed in with an absolute bunch of heathens at lower ranks. If in the army, it's not good. In the Air Force it's even worse.

So...like, no.

Tell her to join the Air Force and get a job in NDI, she'll be employable forever for big cash.

Don't let her do it. I wouldn't allow either of my boys to join the military. This government isn't worth a drop of their blood.
