I’m with you on the first part; the second part is waaaay overblown. We faced off with the USSR for 50 years in proxy wars all over the world with no WW3. In many of these wars US forces were engaged against USSR forces directly.

This is true, and even continued after 1991 because we wanted to grow our influence in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

You should read up on what the Russians did and encouraged in places like Romania and Poland and Czechoslovakia in particular after WWII .
If you are curious listen to Daryl Cooper's Martyr Made about it. The Anti Humans. After that you could be excused if you are an Eastern European that does not trust Russians.
They don't see a real difference between Soviets (Bolsheviks) and Russians. Ask a Pole or a Romanian, they fricking hate Russians.
