Put 'saving the earth' on the back burner, a new catastrophe awaits us if we don't act now

Space Mining Could Ruin Our Solar System
Well, the good news is that we have more than 12 years on this one.

While heads of state bicker over protecting Earth's most vulnerable places from the ravages of industry, a new study suggests that maybe it's not too early to start protecting other worlds from human exploitation, too.
The study, published April 16 in the journal Acta Astronautica, makes a case for designating 85% of our solar system a protected "wilderness" akin to Earth's national parks, leaving just one-eighth of eligible planets, moons and asteroids free to be mined or developed by human interests.

"On a timescale of less than a millennium we could have super-exploitation of the entire solar system out to its most distant edges," the authors wrote. "Then, we are done."

Limiting the exploitation of resources on other worlds now, before the space economy kicks off in earnest, is crucial to avoiding what the researchers call a "crisis of potentially catastrophic proportions."

1969 - Astronauts harvest moon rocks and Mets win world series.
The lesson should have been learned.

A catastrophic crisis that's nothing more than mental masturbation at this point? Sounds about right

Man has set foot on one moon outside of this planet, and has had no long term presence anywhere but this planet.
Going back to the moon is daunting. Mars is a pipe dream.
But go ahead and worry about this. It’ll keep you out of my way.

Maybe they could start by directing their hysteria to the exploitation of resources in Africa by the Chinese.

It's like they just want to maintain a perpetual doomsday mode.

Challenger blows up in 1986 and guess who wins the World Series again?

Am I the only one who genuinely doesn’t give a frick if we mine Uranus into its deepest depths?
Really, are we going to frick up Mars’s endangered species if we start strip mining it for resources???

Is this a euphemism or something?

Well, mining several hundred thousand asteroids and bringing that extra mass to earth really could cause quite a bit of global warming.

I'm an enviro guy but we will need those resouces one day.. period. Until we know there is sentient life elsewhere in the universe/galaxy we have something close to a moral obligation to spread life throughout the universe.

Why do you think Trump wants a Space Force?!

Hank Johnson would say that the earth would flip over.

How is the space economy going to kick off in earnest if 85% of our goddamn solar system is designated a protected wilderness?? Furthermore, what 15% of the solar system do you think these lunatics would not designate for development? That would be the very outer edge of the solar system guaranteeing that we make any attempts at development as expensive as humanly possible.
