Purdue University Acquires Kaplan University--online higher ed is growing like mad

On several occasions here I have spoke of the need to rid taxpayers of the burden of our higher education brick and mortar institutions. I have predicted big moves to online education. It is as plain as day.
Today I read where Purdue University has acquired Kaplan University in a move to dramatically expand it's online presence.
When you read of such things you should prepare for the implications to our system.
There is no way to political close a higher education institution in Louisiana so we should immediately spin them off into private entities and let them fend for themselves. We could then take the money we are spending and give it to Louisiana residents as vouchers to buy higher educations. Our former institutions would have huge advantages over their competitors as they would have a state filled with well financed students.
We are going to be left with huge albatrosses around our the necks of taxpayers.

I like online education, because you don't have to massive cost overruns trying to make your university into a resort spa.

Is there a way to invest in online education stocks?

Online university is on net a good thing. Decreased costs, more flexible access, etc.

It would not surprise me at all that 20 years from now 50% of college degrees are earned online.

If we (the taxpayers) could get the Fed out of the student loan biz, everything would take care of itself.

Most schools have distance learning grad school options now. 30k for an Engineering Systems Management degree from TAMU if you're a Texas resident.

I don't see the issue.

Online education is absolutely the future.

The only issue is whether or not taxpayers should continue to maintain and construct brick and mortar higher education facilities AND if the populace would be better off if most higher is delivered online.

I'm surprised that you're in favour of this. It's going to come crashing down in a few years.

What is going to come crashing down??
Brick and mortar is going to come crashing down when those student loans disappear.

You don't need as many as before.
Of course, some majors need such facilities (hard to study properties of materials without labs, forestry without trees, nursing/medical without labs).
But we accountant types can do just fine without them (just give us a decent system to access textbooks, exams, and case studies). Not to mention those "degrees" which lead to "high paying" Starbucks barista jobs.

Why wouldn't Purdue university just setup their own online school?
Various programs at LSU are doing that now with great success.

In 2005 when I was working on a PhD, I did a project for a class where I researched the possibility of the Ontological Standardization of Curriculum Due to the Growing Interest in Online Learning.
My profs liked it so much we tried to make it a dissertation topic as well. Longer story there.
Anyway, many of my predictions came true.

LSU is almost there. Probably not as far down that road it should be, but certainly farther than any other public university in the state.

Same reason that a company may buy another one instead of starting a new division.
They determined that getting Kaplan's was easier (and maybe cheaper) than setting up their own (or greatly expanding what they had), plus you have the name recognition of Kaplan.

I got my MBA from LSU Shreveport online two years ago. I was doing it at the same time as a friend that was getting a MBA from LSU. Our classes were basically the same, but my schedule was more condensed and the program was 1/3 the cost. Online education is the future for many of the programs offered out there.

Regular universities, outside of the medical and engineering fields, are merely a giant sorting mechanism between those willing to sit through 4-5 years of bullshite they won't use for a cost they can't afford, and those who are not.
