It's been a long enough time that has passed that I feel comfortable sharing this, as a warning to you all.

Nearly 20 years ago, I was on a discussion forum that was 1/1000th of the size of this site. It was a fishing site for the town I lived in. Nowadays there are facebook pages for local fishing news and info, but this was before Facebook or Myspace was invented.

The year was whichever year the anthrax letters were being sent to people. 2005ish.

A topic was posted about a meeting that was happening to discuss some very unpopular change in fishing regulations. I allegedly made a smartass sarcastic comment suggesting someone dust the place with white power to shut it down.

A couple of weeks later, two men showed up at my office and introduced themselves as DHS/FBI (recently merged) and needed to speak with me. My branch manager let us have his nice office. My younger brother was into lots of drug stuff at the time so I was thinking "what the frick has my brother gotten himself into".

We sit down.

They pull out printed out paper copies of every comment I ever made on that website and spent hours intimidating me and humiliating me, saying they could put me in jail for the rest of my life without a trial on terrorism for the comment I made. I was scared shitless. Their tactics definitely worked.

Mind you... we're talking almost 20 years ago. I still have the agent's business card in my wallet as a constant reminder.

Why do I tell you this story?

Be very very fricking careful with the shite you say online. They ARE watching and monitoring every fricking thing you type and saving it, with the ultimate goal of using it against you. It's not a conspiracy theory. It's reality. And it has been for a very long time- not new.

Not doubting you whatsoever, but if they want you, they'll just make shite up. That may not have been the case pre-0bama.

ETA: Already downvoted by a resident Fed.

My accountant told me why he never signs petitions

It’s based on advice from his grandmother, she was a child in Germany and petition rolls were used to round people up

good advice from him and rig…

44 year old me, yes.

24 year old me, scared shitless.

Also, you gotta remember the Patriot Act was brand new and if it involved "terrorism" then you wouldn't necessarily get a phone call to a lawyer, you'd be thrown under the jail and maybe get a military tribunal.

Sorry you were through that; but pretty sure the First Amendment is still in the Constitution.

This country was established in rebellion and "sedition." Any government actor that seeks to interfere or intimidate voiced (or written) dissent is nothing more than an agent of tyranny.

Say whatever the frick you want to say. With the exception of actual threats, we have freedom of speech. 1st amendment of the Constitution. It’s a right.

When they come to talk to you, decline. You don’t have to talk to them. 5th amendment of the Constitution. It’s a right.

Tell them to get bent and you won’t talk without a lawyer and they should only contact you again through your lawyer.

You should give him a call and tell him he's a British cigarette.

I think that at the time, they were desperate to show the Anthrax stuff was domestic terrorism and not some of Saddam's goons. The running theory was that we had not changed the equal or greater response policy toward attacks on America. i.e. chemical or biological would be met with equivalent or greater and we didn't have an equivalent. We knew we could beat Saddam conventionally. We didn't want to go all nuclear on their arses.

I still believe he gave the terrorists the Anthrax. Too many victims were near those 911 monsters to have been a coincidence.

I agree. I'd like to sign the Texit petition, but I'm not going to do so just for fear of future consequences.

Damned dude, if you actually posted about using a white powdery substance, they were just doing their jobs.

Granted I don’t like the threatening nature of the interview.
