Progressive Democrats renewed their push to kill the Senate filibuster after a Thursday night ruling from the parliamentarian dealt a major blow to their efforts to include a $15-an-hour minimum-wage increase in the coronavirus relief bill.
quote:
"Democrats should not be held hostage by Mitch McConnell to help struggling families," Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., tweeted. "It is time to get rid of the filibuster to raise the minimum wage to $15 and pass the other bold policies that Americans voted for us to deliver."
That sentiment was echoed by other progressives, including Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., who tweeted that it was time to "end the filibuster" and "raise the minimum wage," Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., as well as Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., and Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash.
quote:
Despite the calls from some lawmakers, Senate Democrats will almost certainly be unable to nix the filibuster. Doing so would require the support of all 50 members in order to invoke the "nuclear option" and end the filibuster with a simple majority. Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Krysten Sinema, D-Ariz., have previously defended the filibuster, with Manchin saying there is no scenario "whatsoever that I will vote to get rid of the filibuster" in the next two years.

The filibuster is racist, right?
The Hungerbuster at DQ, by simple logical deduction, is also racist.

I said this today or yesterday. The first sign of resistance and its gone.
ETA: Dems have never met a check or balance they didn't want to destroy the second it inconveniences them.

Not gonna happen. Manchin and Cinema are running again in 2024 and know they’ll lose if they kill the filibuster.

Let’s hope they do just that. Let them pass anything they want and see what the consequences are.

Authoritarians wanting anything in their way destroyed...
Imagine that.
Imagine that.

Progressives? Just another example of how Dims are systematically destroying the English language. Serious question, what has the progressive ideology contributed to the betterment of America?

Sounds like their message is " the hell with rules we will do what we want".

Wrong, they will sell out for some campaign cash or money for some boondoggle. Never trust a Democrat to honor his/her previous commitments.

This is how it plays out with Manchin/Sinema
A) They (read Ds) will come to an agreement to pass the Covid bill as it is just without min wage increase.
B) They will agree to adjust min wage to 11/hr immediately with some R support in a separate bill.
and
C) In return the Proggies will hold off on scrapping the filibuster for this Presidential term (at least for this Congress)....at least until the Green New Deal come up for a vote
ETA Forgot to add they'll put some AZ/WV specific pork in the COVID bill too.

I'm inclined to agree with you....BUT if Manchin and Cinema want any chance of being reelected the filibuster better be in place when they are next on the ballot.

They don’t have 50 votes for this to pass, so I’m not sure why they are choosing this issue to attack the filibuster. $15 minimum wage would lose a simple majority floor vote.
