Lots of churches turned their services into a pop/rock concert followed by a pep rally.
quote:contemporary, evangelical churches are mostly deadly serious about this. they haven't compromised on inerrancy nor accommodated to societal pressures. liberal, traditional churches are playing fast and loose with scripture/doctrine/etc.
If religion doesn’t provide some moral direction it’s useless. And sometimes that means delivering sermons that don’t leave people feeling good about themselves.

This is huge. Decades ago, if you were an elected official, or owned a local business, it was essential for you to be seen in church, and that was why many people attended.
It’s no longer a requirement in our society.

You seem to think this is a good thing for society. It's not. Christians typically make excellent citizens. Shocking, considering they believe it's wrong to kill, lie, steal, etc etc, and that there are consequences for their actions. You would prefer a society full of people who think only what they want and feel is important. The judeo-christian ethic is what made this country great in the first place

This can’t be said enough. It’s the irony in their hatred for the ‘blind following of religion’

Sure, but they don't hold a monopoly on it. Jews typically make excellent citizens. Buddhists typically make excellent citizens. Agnostics typically make excellent citizens. Etc, etc.

I want to make sure I'm hearing you correctly, because this is an interesting take...
Your assertion is that the contemporary pop/rock concert churches are the ones who are "deadly serious" about scripture and dogma, and it's the traditional churches that are "playing fast and loose?"
Or are you separating "concert churches" and "contemporary, evangelical churches"?

A lot of conservatives have a mistaken understand ing of the Episcopal Church.

Our nation is been blowing shite up and killing people every day for the past 15-16 years. Young people see thru the bullshite of a nation that claims to be "Christian". The Bible is full of contradictions and myths which have no basis in reality. It has become an outdated and extremely flawed book on which to base one's life. In general, people are less gullible to something which is subjected to interpretation by those who want your money but claim to be able to save your soul. Snake handling has been over-exposed and it is a good thing. Overall, this is a positive trend.

Not trying to start a "religion is good/bad" debate with you, but...
Might want to re-think how you frame your argument...
quote:
The nation’s religious makeup has shifted dramatically in the past 15 years, with a sharp drop in the number of Americans who say they’re members of a Protestant denomination – still the nation’s most prevalent religious group – and a rise in the number who profess no religion.

This is what's wrong with America and is killing religion for many. I remember when politics in the church was anathema. Now preachers are indistinguishable from politicians, the single most despised group in our country.
Let's always blame the white, protestant, evangelicals, when black (not Republican nor conservative) ministers wield tremendous political power in the inner cities.

quote:when i said holding steady i was including several factors that i've already mentioned. first, church plants are strong. those will probably yield new members in future demographic polls. second, tithing is continuing to increase. there has been a reduction in population, from 26% to 17% over 10 years. but as i said, evangelical churches are adjusting and adapting.
The Christian Science Monitor disagrees with you
the membership numbers aren't the top priority for evangelicals anyway. orthodoxy is top priority. God takes care of the numbers.

I’m sure at least some of this is tied to the subversion of a number of Protestant denominations.
Anyone want to guess the number of people claiming Methodist, Unitarian, or Episcopalian lately?
Leftist churches are populated by faithless people who attend based on the inertia of their upbringing. The children of faithless people take no such inertia into their adult lives. They either experience and become Christians individually (and then revert to more orthodox churches) or don't and stop attending entirely.

Your assertion
quote:this is a bit of a generalization but, in general, contemporary evangelical churches are holding fast to say, the bf&m 2000 or some other similar traditionally orthodox creed and they are baptizing regularly.
contemporary pop/rock concert churches are the ones who are "deadly serious" about scripture and dogma
liberal, mainline churches are not. papal comments from the last several decades prove this. methodists are struggling mightily with accommodation. they are what i call post gospel churches. romans 10:9 really isn't a big deal for them overall. now, there are plenty of wonderful, evangelical catholics, methodists, presbyterians, cbf baptists, etc. i'm speaking about the overall theology of those groups.

Very true. At our Methodist church when I was a teen, we had a group of 8-10 men who once a week went out and visited non-participating members and also any new neighbors in close proximity to the church.

This trend is generally accepted to have started in 1517.
