This article is primarily focused on teacher raises and what seems like an inevitable increase in the minimum wage to $8.50/hour, but I think they buried the lead - in a supposedly "conservative" state, nearly 60% of the population supports doubling the minimum wage to $15/hour, including nearly half of Republicans? If it wasn't clear before, it should be pretty obvious that Huey Long populism is still alive and well in Louisiana, and that "Republican" and "conservative" are not synonymous terms. It's typically been a little closer to the center of the political spectrum than other Southern states, but is this indicative of the continued outward migration of productive members of the population, or simply in line with a national trend?

Most Louisianans support raising teacher salaries and increasing the state minimum wage to $8.50 an hour, according to the third of six reports from the 2019 Louisiana Survey.

Moreover, 81% of respondents support an $8.50-an-hour minimum wage, with majority support coming from Democrats (94%), Independents (78%) and Republicans (72%). However, support drops to 59% when it’s set at $15 an hour, and only Democrats maintain majority support (85%), as Republicans (44%) and Independents (46%) fuel the drop.

Most people, including a vast majority of Democrats, are economically illiterate.
Not shocking.
Not shocking.

The general populace is economically illiterate. It's not surprising to see honestly. These people come from a good place wanting their fellow citizens to get paid more, but they don't understand the consequences of a $15/hr minimum wage for EVERYONE.

I'd be curious to see the percentage of Louisiana residents living on government assistance, the minimum wage, and between the minimum wage and $8.50. I would imagine it's one of the highest in the country.

a $15/hr min wage would hurt Louisiana more then a $15/hr wage in San Fran or New Your City.
we have a much lower standard of living.
if you are making min wage after more then 3 months you deserve min wage at the current rate. especially in the current economy with more job openings the people to fill them

Fact: if you don't understand inflation and cost of living you can support increasing the minimum wage.

I bet they didn't ask "would you rather a job or higher min wage"?

So what happens to the folks that have learned skills and worked their way up to $15 per hour?

It's Louisiana and always something for nothing.
Work for 7-8 months, drag up to go hunting and fishing, while collecting unemployment.

If this is true , people are really stupid. I am amazed that 44% of Republicans are that stupid.
They must have been fans of Jeb , Kasich or Rubio .

I would love money that I don't deserve. Only an idiot would say no to that.

Interesting. Who was polled and who did he polling. I was never polled on that just like I was never polled regarding this years governors race.
Once again me thinks this particular poll is skewed just like the governors poll was skewed.
Oh, and no, “most” Louisianians are NOT for $15.00/hour minimum wage. Only useless bums would be for that because they’re too stupid to know any better.

Alternative title - “Vast majority of Louisiana residents fine with being out of work.”
If things weren’t already dead enough in the assholes of the state like Ferriday, this would finish them off.

Get ready for price increases everywhere then.

This state is going down the toilet, and fast.

Hey, if the people want that, give it to them. But the first time I see an $8 burger in a fast food joint will be the last time I go to that place, and same applies anywhere else that jacks prices to pay their unskilled labor. If I can find it cheaper, those businesses will need to find revenue elsewhere.
