Yesterday, President Trump signed three executive orders to focus federal resources on fighting drug cartels, increasing overall public safety, and preventing violence against law enforcement officers.

Perhaps the most worrisome of these is the directive to “pursue appropriate legislation…that will define new Federal crimes, and increase penalties for existing Federal crimes, in order to prevent violence against Federal, State, tribal, and local law enforcement officers.”

While law enforcement officer safety is important, there is no evidence that local or state officials have been reluctant to capture and punish those who commit violence against police. Moreover, there is little empirical evidence that more punitive sentences deter crime generally.

Put simply, the federal government has no business getting involved when local law enforcement is doing its job.

After reading this article it seems like the question is: is this EO gonna make a difference?

IDK but doesn't sound like it's going to do much damage.

I wasn't very concerned by this EO.

Now Democrats are worried about overfederalization?

Wasn't it just last year that Democrats were clamoring for increased federal oversite of local LEOs? Hell, there were calls for federalizing of LE.

I heavily oppose federal involvement. People should remain consistent in their stances though.

Eh. This seems like another EO that doesn't really "do" anything. It almost reads like an expression of the sentiments of the President or something.

The only constant to the Left is inconsistency.

I say go get the criminals. Regardless of whether it's local, state or federal government law enforcement.

Get the illegals and get the criminals and deport them and lock them up.

I think that was more of an accountability issue. Not actually taking over. Rogue federal officers tend to stick out like a sore thumb. But rogue local officers not so much. Ever wonder why 2 officers approach similar conflicts completely different. Is it training or something else?

Its just a declaration. Most of Trump’s EOs are just posturing

Because certain LEO were identified as potentially violating federal civil rights (or other) statutes/provisions. The article explicitly highlights the fact that local prosecutors are having zero problem going after cop killers. Therefore, no feds required. Not hard to understand.
