Remember the 48 4 star generals that Obama fired and replace them with those who aligned with his ideology?

War Secretary Pete Hegseth will announce plans to reduce by 20% the number of positions reserved for generals and admirals during his State of the Force address on Wednesday.
Hegseth approved reduction plans for the Army, Navy, Air Force and the military’s joint pool earlier this month, according to memos seen by Fox News Digital. The services were directed to implement the plans and complete the reductions by Jan. 1, 2027.
Wednesday’s address in Quantico, Va. is expected to lay out Hegseth’s priorities for the military in the year ahead, with the reduction in senior leadership positions among the changes he will unveil.
The new target doubles the 10% overall reduction in general and flag officer positions Hegseth ordered last year as part of his effort to streamline the military’s senior ranks. That earlier directive separately called for a 20% reduction in active-duty four-star positions and a 20% reduction in National Guard general officers.
Hegseth fired several senior generals this year.
In April, Hegseth fired two more Army Generals after he ousted Army Chief of Staff General Randy George.
General George served in the role under Biden’s Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
“General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said.

This doesn’t really make sense unless he’s trying to RIF the entire officer corps.
It’s already 1/30 odds to go from o6-o7, and it’s 1/4 from o5-o6.
Shrinking that pyramid will result in forcing out thousands of O4s before they can qualify for retirement.

I can't if that's his specific goal or if he's just too short sighted to see the consequences of his decisions. Honestly could go either way.

Generals being fired by a failed major. Organizations tend to get top heavy over time. I don’t like the messenger but I agree that this should be done.

That ignores the fact that they don’t create positions after someone is promoted to general. It’s not meta where you can just flatten a line of supervision. You remove one general officer billet and you eliminate dozens of positions that sit below it, and those positions create musical chairs because annyone above o3 that is unsuccessful is forced to separate.

I agree with this,wholeheartedly.
Awhile back I looked up the ratio of flag officers today vs.WW2.
It was 1/1400,WW2 it was 1/6000.
Flag officers today have more ribbons/medals on their chest than Eisenhower,Patton,Bradley,Nimitz,Halsey combined.
Every Navy Officer 04 and above have Expert Rifleman and Expert Pistol medals.I’l never believe their targets were scored, they just shot the required number of rounds and were handed the medals.

The pic of Ike was captured in his office at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) near Paris, France, shortly after he was appointed by NATO as the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

so we should keep an unnecessarily large and bloated officer corps in perpetuity in order to entitle every O-4 to an active duty retirement?

it was much more common back then to not wear all your ribbons, whereas in the army today, dudes put every single possible piece of flair they can think of on their uniform.
it doesnt make your point wrong, and i agree with that point, but it's not quite as stark as the picture would indicate.

they just keep saying it and saying it trying to make it so just by sheer volume. he was in no way a failed major. he had a successful military career with a legitimate and honorable combat record.

Makes sense.
When we have more admirals than ships, its a problem.

Liberal **** love it when they have an excuse to disrespect men who served. Not only was Hegseth not a failure, but he is also not a major. Thats like calling anybody by a rank they once held, like calling all enlisted men privates or all officers second lieutenants. Hegseth has been appointed Secretary of War and now outranks all of those generals.

There are way, way, way, way, way, way, way, way too many generals and admirals.
Each one has to have this whole bureaucratic infrastructure with aides, staff members, PSD, special vehicles, the whole megillah.
There are plenty of jobs that can be done 1 to 2 grades down, with a much much smaller office. A lot of O-5 and O-6 types could be doing a ton of this work much more efficiently.
And a lot of them are superfluous, don't add anything at all. Removing a good slice of these command structures would be addition by subtraction.
I mean, I served with Larry Sellin, an unsung American hero.
