What is the solution? China declared a trade war against us decades ago, and Trump’s finally doing something about it. Do the anti-tariff people think we should just sit down for tea and politely ask China to stop robbing us blind and stealing our intellectual property like they have since at least the 1980s?

Tariffs suck but this issue has been kicked down the road long enough. Sometimes we have to do the tough things to make a big change.

We will need to do the same for immigration reform and enforcement along with several other issues that just keep eating this country’s lunch.

If we can have the economy we are while righting all these wrongs will make going through it a little easier.

Tariffs to protect an industry suck.

Tariffs as a punishment for improper economic activity of a foreign power is just a tool.

It is like penalties on taxes owed. To say “ Fed Gov charged me more than I owe” is bad. To add penalties for not “playing within the rules all others are” is a tool.

I support the tariffs more than I support Ethanol subsidies.

Tariffs are temporary tools to change the behavior of China.

The solution is this; Hold our ground, it’s been long over due. It will hurt short term but in the long run we are better off. China is hoping Trump don’t get re-elected. When he does, they will cave. Their economy has slowed and they will cave.

These tariffs are not to protect an industry, they are long over due to stop countries abusing the shite out of us.

If not now, when? The very industries you speak of have a huge lobby and that has sold America out pure and simple.

Trump don’t give a shite because he’s not a politician in big daddy’s pocket. He is doing what should have been done DECADES ago.

Oh, and I didn’t vote for him. But I will now and regret not doing so the first time.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says autos share equal blame with China for the U.S. trade deficit. Ross said he expects the U.S. president to rule on [auto and auto parts] tariffs by May 18.

Reminder: the auto industry employs more than 4 million Americans in an interconnected chain that has already born the brunt of steep and disruptive metal tariffs. I know pounding the chest feels good but any fallout will be squarely on the President. It’s a gamble.

So the inverse is true in your thinking, that is our economic outlook is strengthening and our employnent is strengthening, so all that greatness will be squarely on the President.

That would be defined as blindly investing in the stock market, purchasing Uber IPO, and voting democrat.

This is why I don’t get IBs melt over the topic.

I actually agree with his stance on tariffs in most cases minus a few industries such as Steel that I believe should be protected domestically for national security purposes.

But I don’t see any other way to get China to the negotiating table. Trump has said he doesn’t intend to keep the tariffs so long as China works out a better deal. If not, tariffs stay and we search for other favorable trade partners.

If the tariffs are a means to get a better free trade deal, im all for it.

You then posted industry info which seems to parallel GDP growth?

As for any pain farmers may feel from all of this. Trump can't really afford to lose any states, even a relatively small one like Iowa.

I'm all for putting pressure on China. It is long overdue. Everyone tells me China plays the long game, they will not yield, but the strength of the American marketplace may be too enticing for the Chinese. Let's see if other countries will "pick up the slack" and produce goods that are lower taxed. Also, Trump appeals to American businesses to make the products here, and I agree this would be a good thing, but those American businesses won't tell Trump it cost too much (salary, overhead, etc.) to produce those good here. The Americans have priced ourselves out. Trump picked a great time to make his move as the economy is roaring...
