Why would the excuse of Russia wanting/needing a buffer be an acceptable excuse for invading/annexing anyone,
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that it is excusable from an international law perspective. Where I guess I differ from others here is that I don’t believe Russia’s base intentions are truly a threat to American interests vis a vis Ukraine. The Arctic and Pacific are a different story. And of course this all changes in my mind if I am wrong and Russia goes in hot.

when Russia basically dickslaps existing NATO members like France, Germany, and the UK around with their gas and oil?
It’s moreso Germany and the Central Euro countries than the UK and France, but yes, you are highlighting the fracture within NATO that Russia is developing/exploiting. It’s got the EU in a quite a pickle.

This new info would appear to indicate Russia is interested in installing a pro-Russian govt (buffer state).

The only way this is “posturing” is if it’s to get the NATO to guarantee no more expansion. I have little doubt Putin will execute if that guarantee is not met. Hence, not posturing.

Does Russia have athletes?
Or are they still having Russian athletes compete unattached?

Betcha Putin is getting the Nordstream 2 pricing "revised" as we speak. And dont be surprised if Blinken is using |US funding to subsidize the pricing for Germany and company.
Dont laugh, we subsidize half of Central America living in the U|S and now heels up is down there spending money for the remainder to stay in Central America. Of course using American companies (who would never dream of kicking back any of that cash).
