The Hill

quote:

"Thousands of terminally ill Americans will finally have hope, and the fighting chance, and I think it's going to better than a chance, that they will be cured, they will be helped, and be able to be with their families for a long time, or maybe just for a longer time," Trump said at a bill signing ceremony at the White House, surrounded by terminally ill patients and their families. Trump thanked lawmakers sitting in the audience who sponsored the bill, including Sen. Joe Donnelly, a vulnerable Democrat up for reelection in Indiana.

I am surprised no one has been talking about this yet ( search brought up nothing although it is mentioned in Hails thread)

This was one of the main things I was looking forward to that had me wondering how the heck it wasn't law already.

Definitely something I will hope is still there later in life, or hell tomorrow for that matter. Any of us could find out we are terminal at any time.

Awesome. I'm interested in how people spin this as a bad thing.

ETA: Never mind, I see it now:

quote:

Most Democrats and public health groups oppose the bill, arguing that it could put patients in danger.

“FDA oversight of access to experimental treatments exists for a reason — it protects patients from potential snake oil salesmen or from experimental treatments that might do more harm than good,” said Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.), ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Opponents also argue it gives “false hope” to patients, since drugmakers aren’t required to give unapproved medicines to patients who ask for them.

I've got news for you, we are all terminal, been that way since birth. The only question is how and when.

I think it would be crazy that people were not allowed access to anything that may keep them from dying

What could be more harmful than being terminally ill?

Putting terminally ill patients “in danger” is a big concern for Dems and their allies?

Wtf?

Common ground. I agree.

Folks against it, argue that corporations will use people as guinea pigs.

Hey, I don't get the line of thinking either. If I'm terminal, trying something is better than nothing. Now having said that, I guess some of the treatments could actually inflict more pain and quicker death.

Having said that, there are plenty of horrible treatments that could lead to pain and quicker death that are approved treatments.

I would want the option. I think anyone with a terminal diagnosis would want the option.

Could it lead to some form of abuse? Maybe a doctor sending a patient to a treatment they don't need yet? Sure. Just like anything else in life, if someone is caught abusing the system, bring the hammer down hard but don't take away any and all hope.

Probably some hyperbolic rationale of health voodoo and witchdoctor holistics, when it is far from it.

A friend of mine had a father who went to Mexico for cancer treatment because AMA prevented doctors to treat in a specific way. Probably because FDA had said no.

It didn't help, and he still passed, but he tried.

If I were terminally ill, I would be totally fine with this.

I saw something earlier that said 40 states have approved Right to Try bills, with almost unanimous approval.

This bill Trump signed was only approved by 22 Dems in the House after unanimous approval from the Senate.

The Dems even bribed cancer groups to oppose the bill:
quote:

More than 100 advocacy groups — such as the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and Friends of Cancer Research — sent a letter Monday to House Republican and Democratic leadership expressing their “strong opposition” to the bill. Guidance from House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on the day’s schedule urged Democrats to vote against the legislation.

They literally oppose things just because they hate Trump.

A potential side effect of the bill is that it could legalize marijuana at the federal level for medicinal purposes.

quote:

While the bill’s provisions are targeted at a wide range of medications, it appears they might also apply to medical cannabis thanks to a clinical trial being conducted by the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Sciences (MAPS).

The MAPS trial, currently in the second phase of the FDA approval process, is testing the effectiveness of smoked cannabis in veterans with PTSD and meets all of the criteria set out by the Right to Try.

Their same flawed line of thinking would mean if you were on the 5th floor of a building that was on fire, that you should not try to jump out of a window and hope you survived the landing.

A slight chance to a terminally ill person is better than not trying at all.

It is. In fact, several of your democrat overlords voted against it (MSM helped carry the water) by saying that it's a health hazard because experimental drugs aren't safe and haven't made their way through the FDA.

Agree.

If I'm dying in a few months, you sure as hell believe I'm gonna take any pill or shot to keep me alive.

This should have been a law since the beginning of laws
