Stupid civilian question. Why are we still using jets developed in the 70s? I realize these modern jets are completely different aircraft but for the body design, but why keep the old dedign? Is this some sort of legislative maneuver so that they’re not considered “new” weapons systems? I understand this was the case with the Strike Eagle and the Super Hornet.

You have to understand how much politics are involved. Then the billions of cost for new engineering.

Its less costly to upgrade older designs. Look how much the F-35 costs (program).

Interesting. You guys more than likely just missed each other. In ‘90 he was a RIO RAG Instructor @vf-101 Grim Reapers b4 being picked up for the RIO to Pilot “Retread” Program that year then going to Kingsville for training in ‘91. He completed his career with three back-to-back tours (vf-142 Ghostriders, vf-21 Freelancer at Atsugi & vf-103 Jolly Rogers) so was never west coast based - except when he was on the Stennis years later doing strike ops…

They have delivered 16 other than the 6 we got. I went to the Boeing site and this year they will be delivering 24.

The autonomous program is a great way to use old F-16 aircraft past their hourly lifespan on the airframe but if we had 120 new block 70 or block 80 that is in the works would be a great 2nd line behind our stealth fleet that is much more economical to operate than the F-15EX and its 2 huge engines. They would be perfect home defense fighters.

The EX will be mission specific aircraft. Like I said before it can carry weapons no other fighter jets can carry and it can carry a lot more than any other aircraft.

I know the F-16C was a Mach 2+ fighter. Wonder what the Viper is capable of

Pretty sure Louisiana is getting the F15EX if they haven’t already upgraded

Pretty sure they’re still building new support facilities for the EX upgrade the last time I checked

I looked at their delivery. Louisiana is suppose to start receiving their jets late 2026 early 2027 and have them all by the end of next year to the beginning of 2028.
