It's a stupid thing to say, because you'd have to cut out the people who "owned" slaves essentially to free them, which is the excuse people like to use when the topic of black slave owners is brought up but is just as true for slave owners of other races.

My family was dirt poor back then and fought for their home, they certainly werent fighting for slaves they didnt own.

Reparations are the most ridiculous, unamerican policy suggestion that exists. The only reparation that should be offered is a continuation of offering those who dont like it here to move to Liberia.

I’ve got a family tree full of slave owners. Two of them directly involved in some pretty well known historical events tied to slavery in South Louisiana.
Wish I could tell you how this has made me fabulously wealthy today, 200 years later, but much to my dismay I’m just a middle class dude drawing a paycheck.

Wealth is gained/lost in single generations. Tell them to get a fricking job and remind them what century it is.

Currently, about 1.5% of the world’s population consider themselves elite overlords enslaving the rest of humanity.

They contrive to reduce the overall numbers of their slaves in order to make them more manageable.

Someone make a legitimate and logical argument for black Americans today asking/demanding and believing they are entitled to some form of reparations

Probably has something to do with uncompensated contributions to GDP.

Doesn't exist.

Are we going to do reparations of non unionized child laborers?

I dont get paid based on my contribution to the GDP is, thats a ludicrous idea developed by college professors who needed to write a paper.

Every parent has uncompensated contribution to the GDP.

Almost every white person or Hispanic was exploited when they got off the boat.

Is their starvation wages more valuable than the room and board slaves got?

Free labor is cheaper by far than slave labor.
The wages then would go towards food and shelter, with no old age pension.

Death often came by 60 for the poor white immigrants, or they killed themselves when they became a burden.

The fact is that slave owners paid a significant amount towards the food, and board of their slaves. Even in many cases long into "retirement".

Just because they didnt have freedom doesnt mean they did not receive compensation.

Some facts about slavery in Louisiana get ignored because it breaks some of the stereotypes. The OG Louisiana slave owners were Creoles of both the white and dark varieties. There were also a fair amount of non African slaves in the early days. Islanders and such imported from Caribbean operations.

In 1860 the US had a population of less than 32,000,000. Less than 10,000,000 people in the south that included around 3,900,000 slaves. Slaves made up 13% of the US population and 40% of the South population.

Out of the 6,000,000 non slaves 25% lived in poverty.

That leaves 4,500,000 people.

The average size of a white household was 5.5 people. That leaves around 820,000 households that could afford slaves.

394,000 households owned at least one slave

In the South just under 50% of the population not living in poverty owned a slave.

You could break it down 6,000,000 people by the size of the household and get 1,090,000 households. 394,000 people owned at least 1 slave, so that means around 40% of households had a slave.

32,000,000 Americans minus the 4,000,000 slaves equals 28,000,000.

28,000,000 divided by 5.5 per household and get 5,090,000 households. 394,000 households had at least one slave equals 7% of households in the US had at least one slave and around 40% in the South.

1.5% is just some made up number

In 1860 a little over 14% of the US was black and In 2023 14.4% was black. Not a big change in population percentage for black people. In 1860 85% of the US was white and in 2023 58%.

Most had dozens, hundreds for a large operation. I’m sure there were small ones as well but your math is way skewed by not accounting for that. Nobody is harvesting hundreds or thousands of acres of anythhing pre industrial era without lots of manpower.

We had less than two dozen max. My wifes family probably had 1000s. (Big Tobacco planters) Probably 95% of slaves were owned by largest 5% plantations.

Go ahead and ask me who we bought them from? Some of these liberal Yankees needs to be careful with their bullshite about history or may need to post the fricking receipts. Those slave ships were mostly all owed by Yankees

But 8-10% of free blacks owned them, and the forat lifelong slave owner was black. There were black and whit3 indentured seevants before that.

The whole premise is stupid.

I did training in Djibouti in 2013. The locals would wait for us to eat MREs and dig through our trash to get our scraps to eat.

Another stupid idea is that these "slaves" sold by their own people had it worse here than where they came from.

What percentage of slaves sold to the Americas was sold by black Africans vs white Africans? Shouldn't those who sold the slaves; black or white, be responsible for any reparations but only to current day people who were actually slaves? Let's narrow this thing down a bit.

What percentage of Senators and House members (e.g., the people elected by the populations to govern the country) owned slaves from the Revolution to the Civil War? The majority of southerners may not have owned salves, but they have blood on their hands by continuing to elect officials that continued to allow the horrific sin to happen.

Wow... talk about ahistoric lies.

There were no poverty definitions in 1860.

The poverty rate in the south in 1860 was MUCH higher if you want to use modern definitions.

The average wage for farm workers was about $10 a month in North Carolina in 1860.
78% of the state were laborers share croppers or farm workers.

Most of them would have been below the poverty line in the 1950s.

28% of free households there owned slaves.

Many people in the south had personal consumption lower than that of slaves on large plantations.
